Once again, turkeys are the main symbol of Thanksgiving nowadays and therefore a book about turkey might be considered a Thanksgiving one even if this day is not the main focus. After all this is just a book about 10 fat turkeys - since the title - sitting on a fence, doing various silly stuff... It's all seasonal, in some ways, but also a thanksgiving book in others!
Whatever you might considere it, if you want it the book is being sold on Amazon for 3,99 dollars. The author is Tony Johnston, while the illustrations are drawn by Rich Deas.
But what's inside? What is the "story" of those turkeys?
Well like I said they start out sitting on a fence, minding their own business, but just after the first page the book reveal its nature: is a countdown, since each turkey for one reason or another leave the fence!
For example the first one goes out in a very Tarzan-esque manner: swinging from a swine! Sure the other turkey might admire that bravery, but that turkey is not coming back to the fence.
The second one prefer sports probably, since he run out on roller skates! The third turkey probably asked himself "Why bother with skates when we are birds, we can FLY!". He tries to, and... well, seven turkeys left.
Sure flying might be nice, but what about the circus? Another turkey try to balance some bricks on a wooden pole, but it doesn't end well. While the day probably start to become hot and warm, another turkey decides to take a dive - not a regular dive, a swan dive! Can't turkey be swans, after all? There are not only turkeys in this book, since the next turkey leave the fence by riding non other than a boar! Another turkey, another animal: swallowing a bee is the way the next turkey goes out. And finally, one turkey goes out with the head stuck in a shoe (but he's whistling so he might be fine), another one with a enormous exploding bubble gum baloon, and the final one jumps out on a pogo stick.
And finally, the book and the countdown both come to a end: it is revelaed that not only there are no more turkey on the fence, the fence itself is no more! But now the turkeys are on a tree. There are still 10 of them, and the story is ready to begin again, with the turkeys going out one after another...
It's a really simple book but a lot of fun: the way in which each turkey leave the fence is original and hilarious, and the wordings is simple and formulaic enough so that children can read and follow easily the story.
- Cute illustrations
- Very funny
- Board book, very resistent
- It can teach how to read and how to count
- Very fun rhymes
- Thanksgiving is not even mentioned
- Some of the rhymes feel forced
- Some of the picture have way too many details and it's difficult to see what's going on
- Some of the humour in which the turkeys fall off is a bit too weird
