Beauty pageants are harmful for women.

Beauty pageants are harmful for women.
Empowerment and confidence are the two main objectives of any beauty pageants. They envisioned a queen which will serve as a good example to the society. However, a lot of people are questioning this ideal because the believe that this kind of pageantry gives more harm than good to women. The wearing of swimsuits and skin-showing are the most controversial issue about beauty pageants. Many believe that more than women, it is men who are empowered with beauty pageants. What are your thought about it?

A women doesn't need to prove herself to the socie

Beauty pageants are just a competition. There will be a winner, a runner up and the others lose out on a chance to win something. Every women is a beautiful creation of God. Beauty is just one characteristic and should not be attributed to a women's success in life. Every women has her own unique qualities. These competitions will only bring out negativity in the minds of those who do not win.

I love that you stated how every woman is beautiful. We need to remember this, as there are so many out there that do not feel this way. I do see how they bring out negativity in the minds of women. This is because everyone thinks that in order to win a pageant like this, they need to be a size 2. I mean when is the last time we saw a winner of Miss America that was a plus size?

I agree somewhat

If the girls are groomed at a young age to only be an object of beauty, then they start to think that's their most valuable asset. At that point, it takes precedent over education, compassion, brains, decency, etc.
Posted by NickJ on 11-17-2018
It is a fact that there is a preference for extremely thin models on the catwalk. What is more unknown is the fact that the industry employs a large number of girls, whom it values for its adolescent physique. The real problem lies there, in the obsession the fashion industry has not only with youth but with extreme youth. And I think we should ask ourselves why we have allowed that ideal. Why does society have this perverse fascination with the image of very young girls, inexperienced and, in a way, vulnerable?

Looks aren’t all of it

It’s simple to me - beauty pageants focus on one thing and one thing only. Looks aren’t the only thing that defines a person but beauty pageants seem to focus solely on that.

Although it does seem to empower women, what I have observed is that it only makes women a prey to nasty men especially those in the elite society because some of them would use their powers to convince some beauty queens to get favors in exchange of lusty acts. It actually happens here where I live and it's a very toxic culture. Also, I have observed that it does only separate women because only those who are gifted physically can actually join the pageant while the 'ungifted' as what others describe, are hindered of such privilege.
Posted by jaybee19 on 11-18-2018

I agree somewhat

I think some beauty pageants are just like prostituting women. There has an allege of the recent known beauty pageant where there were against women act happened.
Posted by mark86 on 11-17-2018

I think the problem with beauty pageants is the standard that the women have to achieve to get that required body size. I've heard of stories of women puking out their food after eating just to get into the right size. It's hard to be a beauty queen I guess since the required body is that of a skeleton and I can never understand why women would want to achieve that look.

Women are not cattle

Any women who thinks herself empowered by a beauty competiton needs her head examining in my opinion. If you need to parade yourself in a swimsuit to discover yourself beautiful then you have a serious lack of self-esteem. These are competitions and everyone should choose for themselves, but they glorify a particular body image. This image is not the only beautiful body image there is. To my mind, beauty contests send a very poor message to women concerning self-image and are exploitative.
Posted by HappyLady on 11-19-2018

Sometimes I feel like

Sometimes I feel like these pageants are more of propaganda than celebrating femininity. In the end, people watch to see who won, see whose country would be proud and who gets the prize. These pageant doesn't really show how women change the world, how they fight for their rightful place. Most of the beauty queens are just beautiful and they just happen to be social workers when they have joined the pageant. And yet the ramble on about changing the world. talk about saying anything to get the prize.

Desire for self-esteem

Some women gains self confidence because they think that joining a beauty pageant makes them look pretty in the eyes of people. It feeds on their ego and they eventually become greedy of it, not knowing that it is the wrong way. They are exposing their skin just to feed their self esteem. I don't agree with the concept of beauty pageants.
Posted by hstinscdln on 11-17-2018

Beauty pageants are a form of exploitation. It capitalizes on women, putting them on the stage to be judged for their assets, and promotes society's unnecessary beauty standards.
Posted by astraherondale on 11-17-2018

I Agree :)

In my opinion, showing some skin or showing all the world that you are beautiful doesn't make you strong, empowering and it also doesn't empower other women. Actually, it gives women the idea that they are not that beautiful enough like these ladies in the pageant. The tendency is that they are given a "standard of beauty" to copy. You can empower women thru other ways not just by being beautiful and sexy.
Posted by jessie271 on 12-14-2018

Beauty is not the only attribute that makes a woman perfect. In my opinion, beauty pageants are not safe for women since they are forced to prove their selves to society. A perfect woman doesn’t need to prove herself.

Beauty Pageants Empower Men?

Beauty pageants empower men? Since when did men ever need empowering? (O.o) Beauty pageants are about money!! Beauty pageants are a competition just like most other competitions. The winner usually gets a scholarship to pay for her education and also gets to travel as a sort of goodwill ambassador and get involved in charitable works, and get a door open to lots of other opportunities. Ask Priyanka Chopra?

I wish people would stop dissing beauty pageants. Should they change the name and call them Scholarship Competitions. It's an “ideal of beauty”. What's wrong with that? Everybody has an “ideal of beauty”. It may not be the same as the pageant operators but the pageant owners are investing a lot of money and want a return on their investment! The contestants are investing in themselves and also want a return on investment!

Sign of Competitiveness

Beauty pageants are sign of competitiveness. We know we all are unique in this world. And beauty needs to be respected. And people need to be understanding of the fact beauty contests will always exists. We all be judged and compared. Nothing wrong with that as long as it is done for positive intention.

women aren't weak minded

I think when you want to take down these institutions just so women can supposedly feel better about themselves then you don't really think much of women at all because otherwise you would just allow these things to go on and trust that women can make up their own minds and make decisions on their own. By saying that these things are damaging the minds of women means that you think women should be treated with kids' gloves because their brains can't handle such a small thing like a beauty pageant.
Posted by Wubwub on 11-17-2018

You're Kidding Right

Bottom line is these so-called beauty pageants are pointless for me. Sure, it is about beauty, but every candidate is beautiful in their very own way. Different places have different standards, so I wonder what the criteria they use to judge who wins are.

Beauty pageants have been around for so many years

I don't think beauty pageants are harmful for women. Beauty pageants have been around for so many years, and these make women feel proud of their individuality. I personally think that pageants help women boost their confidence. Well, I'm sure those who join pageants are there with their own will and that's what they want. It would be harmful if they are being forced to enter the competition and do things they don't like.
Posted by theresajane on 11-17-2018

Not at all

I am not a huge fan of beauty pageants but I support our candidates in the international pageants. For the longest time these beauty pageants produce empowered women to voice out their advocacy. Beauty Queens are considered to be some of the most influential women in the world. Women expand their circle of influence because of these pageants. Though we can't deny that there are some issues of conspiracy and harassment in some pageants but they are not enough to prove that pageants are harmful for women.

Beauty pageant empowered women

A beauty pageant is one of the achievements of every woman in the world. They are showing sexiness inside and out by keeping their body fit and healthy and by answering questions in their most intelligent way. A pageant is a big example that people admire and appreciate the beauty of a sexy body, beautiful face and brainy women of our new generation.
Posted by Em14 on 12-03-2018

Beauty Pageants are for a cause

As long as the beauty pageant has a good cause, raise awareness to current issues, and protect the candidates, I don't see any harm in it.
Posted by clarisseblogs on 11-19-2018

Is beauty pageant is harmful to women? this is a very sensitive topic but if I would choose or cast my vote I would say it is not harmful to women. They have all the right to express their selves. Wearing a bikini and all is just a way to show confidence and all.
Posted by antonToledo on 12-07-2018

Unless you force them to enter the competition and do something that is against their will, beauty pageants will never be harmful to women. I have never thought of the concept of beauty pageants as something that could harm us, I, instead, think that it helps women uplift their mood and be proud of themselves as women.
Posted by theresajane on 11-17-2018
You are right that beauty pageant is a voluntary contest for women to join or not to join. It is a showcase of beauty and other talents that the woman could show. It is only called beauty pageant because the beauty is the first and foremost criterion but lately it is becoming a woman’s pageant because talent and brain are being the dominant factors of the contest.
Posted by Corzhens on 12-10-2018
Well, I don't think that Beauty pageants are harmful to women. In fact, Women feel more empowered when they are able to participate in beauty pageants. I think that these competitions do give a good exposure to the participants and help in enhancing their confidence and grooming their personality. However, sometimes the participants go to extremes in order to win these competitions. They may starve themselves to look leaner and slimmer. Such things should always be avoided by the girls and women who participate in these beauty contests.
Posted by jpk0007 on 11-17-2018
I agree with you. It must not be viewed as harmful to women as it is one of the reasons why women feel empowered and beautiful.
Posted by theresajane on 11-18-2018
Beauty pageants are not harmful to women. It is a way of empowerment. Through pageants, women are empowered. I don't find the use of swimsuits as a problem, women use it everyday. It's not as if they were forced to wear it in front of millions of audience. There is no disrespect with the women.

Pageants are a way of empowerment to women. The showing of the skin and the use of swimsuits are part of the society today. Everyday we see women using swimsuits and showing skin. As long as the woman is not forced to do such thing then there is not disrespect. The women who joined pageants are women that are confident and strong. It is not easy to face millions of people and have them judge you.
Posted by Alymae on 11-17-2018
I don't think it is harmful to women. The women who wants to join, they were never force to flaunt their body in front of the people. It is their to choice to do it ad besides they are bringing pride to their country. Besides most of those women who joins beauty pageant, they trainer to look out their body condition. They were never starved their self just to look thinner in order to participate in the contest
Posted by luv2xacosta on 11-17-2018
Beauty pageants are good for women because they could show their capabilities and not just their outside beauty. I believe that for some beauty pageant there are a little bit of misconception about what really it is.
Posted by mark86 on 11-17-2018
I love watching pageants because it highlights the best in women - their looks, their personalities and their intellects. It presents women who have done so much in their personal lives, who are successful in their careers, who are well rounded, knowledgeable in current events and are willing to make a difference to help others.
Posted by iambeth on 11-17-2018
I love watching beauty pageants and I am surprised to read this content. I never thought that beauty pageants can be harmful to women. I respect other's opinion but for me, beauty pageants are a great way for women to show their beauty and share their knowledge with everyone. They get to know other women all over the world and build a good relationship. I don't have any issue with their swimsuit since even models wear that.
Posted by superlicca on 11-18-2018
No, it will never be harmful to women. Beauty pageants are a good platform to promote the women empowerment. It is only harmful when men don't contain themselves and always have malicious things with the candidates even though there is not. Men should control themselves and not be superior in any way, there should be gender equality.

Personally, I'm a fan of beauty pageants eversince I was 5. I love to see those young and confident women showing beauty and intelligence to win the crown and represent their country. Watcging pageants inspire me and other people as well especially girls and gays. But sad to say a lot of pageant organization does not handle their pageants well. For example the news anout a sponsor asking for sex in exchange of the crown in Miss Earth. The organization should not just think of how to make tge pageant successful but also take good care of tge candidates. This is a big issue that should be taken care of immediately. Tbose harassment should be stopped.

I find it funny that the argument works like women don't need to prove themselves and also which one looks better she or me? How does this game works? I mean what men are supposed to choose when given a chance and also when you lose you get to say you don't need to prove yourself to the society. I find those arguments really funny to be honest.
Posted by overcast on 11-18-2018
The only harm I can think of beauty pageants is the struggle during their training. Imagine wearing high heels most of the time, I can't even stand properly wearing high heels. Also, they have to maintain their body figure, maybe some of them restrict themselves from eating much.
Posted by KIRZZ on 11-18-2018
I don't believe that pageants are harmful to women. Many beauty queens and even beauty contest losers use pageants to jump start their career. The pageant usually offers great prizes and pot money for the winners so it can be a lucrative activity for the deserving contestants. Most pageants require beauty, wit, and talent and it's not all about physical beauty. The pageants usually show them in various attires and I don't think it's demeaning for them to be wearing swimsuit on the stage specially in this day and age. It's a tough competition and contestants go through rigorous training and preparation.
Posted by chatbox on 11-18-2018
No, due to the fact most of those women choose to be in beauty pageants. nobody is forcing them, and that they truly discover it fun and amusing, therefore it doesn’t “harm feminism”. If displaying off her look makes a woman feel lovely and empowered, then preventing her from doing that might be harmful to feminism.
Posted by jetselle on 11-19-2018
This is coming from a male perspective so I don’t really know how valid or accurate my opinion is, but I actually don’t think that beauty pageants are all that harmful for women. I’d dare to say that beauty pageants are to women what sports are to men. Men enjoy sports for the training and competition, and many women enjoy pageants for the same reason. They’re a reason to hone your body and mind, and compete in something that can provide great rewards. I don’t think losing a pageant is any more harmful to a woman than losing a big league match is to a man.
Posted by Denis_P on 11-19-2018
It might not be harmful but there are circumstances happening to some woman in pageant where in some sponsors or let say behind those pageant's sponsors who help and support them achieve their dream, in exchange of forcing them to give what those persons wants and one is sexual harassment just like the recent issue.

No harm in exploring outside of your "shell" so to say They give girls and guys and opportunity to make new friends build self-confidence and learn so many new things. Public speaking, making new friends, and to not be so shy. Everyone has an opportunity to say no. Some pageants yes i have to agree are a little much. Take Toddlers and Tiaras for example. Not all pageants have the fake teeth and the spray tans and the thousand dollar dresses. There are natural ones and what we call "glitz" ones. Everyone has their own personal say in which ones they want to compete in. These give girls and guys a chance to flaunt what they have. While making new friends, having fun, becoming roe-models, and becoming graceful winner and good losers in the process.

Beauty pageants are harmful for women: Not at all. If through that beauty pageants they experience being harrass then its very harmful for them. Pageants helps women to develop and discover their beauties inside and out. It helps them earn their confidence.
Posted by mhingnhormz on 11-21-2018
I can say that it is not harmful for women joining beauty pageants because beauty not only means a perfect outside appearance but also what's more important is the beauty inside. The divergent beauty of each women who joins the pageant and what good they can share with the world.
Posted by Marako0406 on 11-21-2018
I believe that beauty pageant is to show the power of women in the aspect of beauty and intelligence. I wonder why some people would insist that there is gender equality that men and women are equal. I beg your pardon but women are born for their beauty not only the face but also the body. The beauty pageant is women power and it should be perpetuated as a symbol of the woman’s beauty.
Posted by Corzhens on 11-21-2018
Plus, these so-called beauty pageants take into consideration their intellect, their ability to speak English, congeniality, and more. It should have a different name as it's not only about beauty but a human being as a whole.
Posted by NerdIndeed on 11-23-2018
Beauty pageant is doing well because they have certain projects that they pursue to help the community but still it is all about business also.
Posted by mark86 on 11-23-2018
I like this side of beauty pageants, I like the way those beauty competitions have turned, to become something more significant than just beautiful women walking by. In fact, lately, there are beauty contests that don't require swimwear competition, and that base their main selection by interviews, and community actions from the contestants, that's the kind of beauty that has real value.
Posted by ballyhara on 12-13-2018
I don't think beauty pageants are harmful for women. It's not the pageant itself but maybe you are just pertaining to the part where they have to wear sexy clothes which is kind of provocative for other men. In that case, it depends on the viewers and not the pageant itself. It could only be harmful if the competition becomes more serious and causes mental shock or whatsoever on each contestant. As far as i know, most of the contestants, even if they lose, had a great experience in these kinds of competitions.
Posted by gutzman on 11-25-2018
I'm not sure what you mean by empowering men with just wearing swimsuits. And no I don't think beauty pageants are harmful if you learn more about the candidates you'll see that they're all successful women and each of them have their own specific goal they want to achieve. I think the swimsuit part of the competition is more about judging a candidate's confidence in herself, the swimsuits aren't even skimpy at all.
Posted by knnon on 11-26-2018
I see what you mean. You will hardly see women going to watch a beauty pageant. This kind of event attracts mostly men. Who own Miss world? Its Donald Trump the biggest misogynist. Men use these competitions to rate women and make them feel horrible about their bodies. These pageants should allow women of all sizes if they want to be considered fair. Women should be judged on their personalities and what they have achieved. Women are expected to be thin while men can get away with being fat and out of shape.
Posted by jaymish on 12-05-2018
I believe that behind the glamor, the fashion world conceals abuse and exploitation of young people. The profession of a model has a dark side, marked by exploitation and injustice. As is known, this line of work also generates many criticisms related to weight and body image.
Posted by mcnasci24 on 12-11-2018
Sometimes, parents tend to raise their girls to be in these beauty pageants, and they only let them see that beauty is their only gift. There's nothing wrong about being a nice image, and be beautiful, but is wrong not to develop their other talents. So, what happens if they get a deformation, a disease, or anything that takes away their physical beauty? they can get to think is the end of the world for them, while they're keep being so valuable, so young, so important, with so many more to offer than just being pretty right?
