Black Cats are not bad luck

Black Cats are not bad luck
Many people assume that black cats are bad luck. I do not believe that they are. In fact, I am so positive that they are not bad luck that over half of my cats are black. Three of my cats are pure black.

Black cats have been labeled as being bad luck for 100s of years. The folktale was started when a father and son were walking one night on a moonless night when a black cat crossed their path. They began to throw rocks and stones at the poor cat, which became injured. The black cat then found refuge at an older woman's home. The father and son saw this woman the next day, limping. They believed that woman had turned into a black cat during the night. The woman was labeled as a witch. It is believed that witches turn into black cats to prowl the streets at night so they go by unnoticed.

This superstition is believed by many in the United States. However, it is important to note that many places believe cats are good luck or bring prosperity to an individual. Those places include Japan, Russia, Great Britain, and Scotland.

Not at all

The color of a cat has nothing to do with bad luck. I think it is terrible that some think that way and they will abuse or mistreat a cat because of its color or they won't buy a cat because it is bad. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. All cats are thenjoying same. You can have bad luck whether you have or come across a black cat, a white cat or an orange cat. It makes no difference.

Most of our activities are centered in the mind. If you believe a black cat is evil then it really become evil. It is so if you think otherwise. True black cats have no evil in them.

Yep, I agree with you. Here it is believed that if a black cat crosses the road in front of you, you will have really bad luck.

I personally don't believe in any of these superstitions because there is no proof of it being valid. I don't know when the whole idea started or why but it is false. I love cats and for me, it doesn't matter what color they are. No cat brings bad luck, trust me. They are the most amazing animals ever.

Posted by Mehano on 09-15-2017

Nope! I don't believe black cats are bad luck at all. I don't believe in superstitions. A black cat doesn't cause bad luck anymore than an orange cat does.

Not a Bad Luck

I don't believe that black cats bring bad luck as what the foktale says it is because we have black cats at house and I haven't experience such bad luck in my entire life because of black cats. Though there are some bad lucks but I am not linking it to having black cats because there are more positive than negative.
Posted by rage35 on 09-14-2017

Of course not.

I was never a very superstitious person, and most superstitions really just seemed like hardcore mumbo jumbo to me. I get logical ones like it's bad luck to walk under a ladder, cause I mean that's just a safety hazard. But ones like black cats being bad luck? No way. I think it's just the remnants of the Witch Trials and people believing that black cats were witches in animal form or whatever. I think black cats are incredibly beautiful, and I've actually been planning on getting one as a pal for my Tabby cat. Too bad my grandparents are superstitious, they're going to think I'm a warlock.
Posted by Denis_P on 09-15-2017
Get your cat whatever others think. Maybe this will help them appreciate black cats. Get one to be pal to your tabby.

Not At All Bad Luck

I remember my black cat which was extremely friendly. And it was very attached to some of us. You can see that it added up a lot of fun into our family. We enjoyed having such cat in our family. So on that basis I can say it only brings fun and joy into the family. So its not bad luck people have to understand that.
Posted by overcast on 09-15-2017
Maybe it was charming you so that you think it is good. At night it might have changed to a jinni or woman. Did you observe it keenly?

Not at all

I have found a black cat a few years ago, I don't know if he had a master or not. I called him, he came and I have taken him home, he was our cat for three years. I have not felt that he was bringing bad luck, I don't believe in this superstition.
Posted by wallet on 09-16-2017

Not unless you're allergic to cats

There's no credible evidence that black cats are bad luck. They are really cute though.
Posted by anna on 09-15-2017
Hey have dander which effects my asthmatic wife. All cats do and not only black ones. She dits far from cats.

Haha... No!

Of course not. I don't know where people take such nonsense things, haha! They have very fertile minds that should be used in another way.

Black cats are just cats with another color. Putting the blame on them because your life is not according to what you expect is a lot of nonsense.

Posted by wiseagent on 09-15-2017

I don't believe in those superstitious belief. I never thought of blaming anyone or anything when something bad happens to my life. It's not logical to do that. And it's also infair. Life is full of unexpected things. Good or bad, we all experience it. And life is what we make it. So it's really unfair to blame a poor cat about the bad thing that might happen. I love animals specially dog and cats. They also have their own life and for me anything with a life is god's gift.

stupid superstition

Black cats are very beautiful creatures and I had one black cat some time ago. He was lovely and very loved by my family. Nothing ever happened to me or to any member of my family because of this cat "giving us bad luck". We don't believe in that kind of thing and I think this is ridiculous to consider them as bad luck "sign".
Posted by felabruno on 09-16-2017

They bring me luck, most of the time.

My cat is half black, half white, so I guess it counts a little; she brings me so much love and luck that I can't believe in such statement.
Posted by Wyvh on 09-14-2017

I agree

I agree because we have had a black cat. He was very intelligent because he knows how to open my window screen and go inside our house and people got amazed of how intelligent he was.
Posted by Scarlet on 03-08-2018

Not really

The witch argument is just terrible and to think that here in Italy people who got suspected of being witches would have terrible things done to them.. I don't even want to think about it. Bad luck doesn't come from black cats, they are cute and are simply like every other cat. I never had anything bad happen to me if they crossed the street right in front of me.
Posted by Tania997 on 09-15-2017

I agree because I think it's just a myth and people should really stop believing in such things that are not based in any scientific fact. I would agree that it is a bit fun believing in some myths like this though because it sort of adds a layer to our everyday things, but I think when we take these ideas too seriously is when it starts to be a bad thing.
Posted by Wubwub on 11-21-2018

False Info

Whoever said this made a mistake. Black cats are never bad luck. Here in our country we had this saying to, but i never believed in it. I never heard an accident occurred because of meeting a black cat. Too bad for those cats born black cause they're usually thrown or strayed because of the saying.
Posted by PLScloni on 09-15-2017

Superstitious Belief

There is no connection of a cat being black to your luck in life. Why would you want to put your blame to the poor cat on the shitty things that happens to you? Not the cat's fault it is black. Ha ha. It is a superstitious belief!
Posted by geloi on 09-15-2017

not bad luck

For me black cats is not bad luck only the color that I don’t like it makes me feel scary or not that cute cat. But I don’t see it as a bad luck, some people says it is bad luck. I read some articles before or some who post in social media that Black cats are a symbol of the soul's mysterious coming to earthly life. Black cats generally are considered to be bad luck in some countries, but they are considered to be good luck in Japan and the United Kingdom.
Posted by honeybabe on 09-14-2017

Not at all

I think it is a terrible idea to think that an innocent cat can bring bad luck simply because of its color. This is a superstition from ages ago that we really need to outgrow. It is already 2017 and most people of this generation use science and logic in their decisions rather than a baseless myth.
Posted by johnrajiv123 on 09-14-2017

I don't believe that black cats are bad luck. Not because they're black, it can bring bad luck to you if you encounter one. I'm not a lucky person, to be honest, so I don't mind seeing a black cat whether it's true or not. But it's really not true. Not because they're black, that means that they came from darkness or whatever. It's just a superstitious of our ancestors since they have plenty, for every action that you do or things that you have.
Posted by ColdFlameChris on 11-02-2017

Old saying

Black cats = Bad luck is just an old saying. This superstition is also amplified by some horror movies that show the protagonist encountering a black cat before something bad happens. I feel bad for black cats that get harmed by people who think they are associated with bad luck.
Posted by EfficientNinja on 11-22-2018

Doesn't mean that it is a black cat it will bring bad luck, not all of them will. Actually they are cute and they are still cats. We cannot just discriminate them just because they are black. I would like to take care a black cat.
Posted by ajahcuizon on 11-22-2018

That is what it is. Superstition creates stories out of nothing. Black cats are not evil but charming companion at home. Nobody should shy away from having black cats as pets.
Posted by stbrians on 11-21-2018

Felix the cat is innocent

Its not the fault of the black cat if people around are unlucky. Colors are not the basis whether you are going to be lucky or not. Primarily those who experience ill luck were mainly a product o their own choices or actions.
Posted by bee.rthooyah on 11-22-2018

Black is not bad luck

I definitely love cats. Especially black ones. They are sweet furry animals and great company at night.

Bad luck is not of color. For me there is no connection at all.

Posted by emiaj55 on 11-22-2018

I choose to agree. Cats has different colors. It doesn't mean bad luck.
Posted by menchuuy58 on 11-22-2018

Bad luck is your bad choice.

For me, black cats are NOT bad luck because I was born and raised in a community where there are a lot of stray cats and some of them are black. In my years of existence, I have never experienced "bad luck" right after and encounter with a black cat. I believe in the saying, "Bad luck is your bad choice."
Posted by clarisseblogs on 11-21-2018

I don't really believe in it too much

I don't really believe in any of this superstitious stuff, to be honest with you. But I always thought that people considered black cats as being bad luck. My parents are actually the opposite because they always thought that seeing a black cat was a good and lucky thing. But, whenever we have seen a black cat, our days have always been ordinary, nothing too good or nothing extremely unlucky.
Posted by kingcool52 on 09-15-2017

They are bad luck

Chinese people believed that black cats are bad luck because it will bring curse, unfortunate events and raising the dead.

I had encounter 2 female black cats which gave Birth to kittens, both black cats mommy died in my garden without a cause. There weren't any signs of injuries and the kittens died too. I had to dispose them, gave me lots of trouble and my in laws had health problems all of a sudden, my earnings dropped. Don't tell me those are coincidence

Posted by peachpurple on 09-15-2017

They aren't bad...

If I spent my life worrying about my luck in terms of is a random black cat were to cross my path, I would most likely go insane. Life does not need a black cat, or any other superstition, to be hard as hell on all of us. Did blacks cats run across the streets of every men who has ever died in war or a carwreck or from cancer? I think not. Black cats are just fine. They can walk in front of me and lead the way anytime. Actually, maybe it is good luck to follow a black cat...I bet they are all going somewhere there is something you could eat.
Posted by JoeMilford on 09-15-2017

I'm superstitious!

Well since I am a superstitious person I will say they might bring bad luck, I just avoid them in general. I don't own cats and I don't like cats in general either. I find them to be a little bit spooky and they look sort of mean, they probably are not but that's just the feeling they give me. No black cats for me!
Posted by Pink_Turtle on 09-14-2017

Superstitions of old people

The thought of the color of any cat being lucky or unlucky is based on the folk tradition of where you live not on the cat’s color. I’ve seen several reports of old people moaning about having difficulty placing black, or black and white, cats because of “luck”. This is plain nonsense.
Posted by muaaz.93 on 09-20-2017

I should also add that some people will adopt black cats around Halloween time, only because they do not like them. It is a fact that many more black cats are adopted around this holiday then any other time of the year. Some adopt them just to do mean things to them, which is completely cruel. I just can not understand how someone could be mean to a cat or any animal as they do not deserve it at all!
Posted by angie828 on 09-14-2017
In my home country also, people are very superstitious about cats, and black cats in general. They believe that black cats bring bad luck. My parents also believe that black cats bring bad luck. I always reject their idea and even try to convince that in ancient time, in Egypt, cats were considered gods and someone who killed a cat could be killed as a punishment. However, they don't buy my logic.
Posted by vinaya on 09-14-2017
You are not in a good situation when your belief runs against the culture and tradition. I am fortunate because people here understand that some traditions are just superstition and are not true like that black cat. But there are superstitions here that are still being followed to the letter particularly the beliefs related to the dead. That when a loved one dies you do not wear red colored clothes
Posted by Corzhens on 09-19-2018
The issue of black cats being a bad luck depends on the area someone is coming from. In my place black cat can be seen to be a witch and to bring bad luck. In some European countries where there is no such belief, then the cat doesn't bring bad luck.
Posted by babyright on 09-15-2017
same here. Black cats are considered animal form of a witch. They say if black cat crosses your path, you have to take a second route because something terrible might happen. I once had an accident when a black cat crossed my path, however, it was just a coincidence because nothing terrible happened when black cat crossed my path many times.
Posted by vinaya on 01-18-2018
I really doubt the first incident had anything to do with. the cat you saw,it just one of those superstitious belief, color has nothing to do with danger, danger comes unexpected not because of the color of animals that we saw.humans just like to attribute misfortune to things.
Posted by lovely on 04-24-2018
I'm scared of relating with cats and dogs in this life and that has made me cut my visits to so many places I would have visited and share some memories with. I mean that I still do not understand why people keep pets and feed them as well, maybe it is because I do not have interest in those animals. However, on the issue of black cats bringing bad luck, I do not think it can be said so far they are cats for goodness sake and their colour does not matter that much in my opinion. bad luck can come from anywhere, so we should be careful of blaming a mere animal for such incident.
Posted by Barida on 09-15-2017
Maybe it is just the color of the cat itself that feels like it induces bad luck. I actually owned a black cat for 4 years and it wasn't an unlucky 4 years. In fact, they were of the best years of my life so far. That whole black cats being witches sounds a bit far fetched, but unexplained phenomena have to be blamed on something. I think there was just an abundance of black cats in the wrong place at the right time or wrong time rather.
Posted by AlexHarris on 09-15-2017
I agree with you that black cat is not bad luck only people who made rumors that ruined the image of black cats. It depends also on the belief of some people or culture that's why we adopted how we see black cat if it brings good or bad luck.
Posted by rogel on 09-15-2017
When I was 5 year old we had this little black kitten. It remained with us for 1 year or so. And then it disappeared. And it only added up more fun and joy into family. We had bell in it's ring. And when called up it used to come to our house. And it was one of the good cat. And it used to be very attached to the mom and me. So I'd say it is indeed a good luck to have such cats around. I'd say cats are always good luck black or the white, it does not matter.
Posted by overcast on 09-15-2017
I just believe it this silly notion of always believing that anything black is demonic or evil.I don't believe there's any bad color. A cat to me is just an animal be it white, black or brown. It doesn't matter.I can't believe that because a cat is black means bad luck. I totally disagree.
Posted by lovely on 09-15-2017
I don't believed such things that cats were bad luck. People's bad behavior is a bad luck. I only believed that cats represents of incoming dangers such as something gonna happens. I believed part of its phenomena, but making a black cat, as bad luck is not my beliefs at all. Cats are lovely animals, they are my favorite pets. I usually let my cat get inside my bed all the time, and they always sleep besides me. Though this animals sometimes annoying, I do really love to play with them, especially in stress moment of my life.

Cats are lovely creatures, and they more easy to along with humans. Though many people at different places believed cats are Witch forms, still it's not good to kill those poor creatures. They have their own life, as human beings we are a responsible to take care our planet, especially the animals.

Not true. We have black cat and he didn't bring bad luck but bring good luck for us. He eat all the mice, rats and cockroaches in our house and store room. We are lucky to have him as a pet. He's very friendly and sweet and he's a smart one. He guard our house from pests and eat them. Who say owning a black cat bring bad luck? Were lucky to have him.

Superstitious people usually believe that black cat is a black omen but I don't think the same. I am a pet lover, and cats are my most favorite animal. I own a cat and it's in black color and never did it brought any bad luck to me or to my family.
Posted by DanoCath on 09-15-2017
For me I don't believe that black cats is bad luck it's up to the person if he or she believe all those fairytail thoughts. God created animals for peoples companion or pet so I think for me they are blessings to us we should treat them with love and care not to hurt them.
Posted by tophew on 09-15-2017
Well I've had a few black cats and sometimes they behave even better than the colored cats. A cat with a good behavior usually fosters good attitude among other animals and people around it. I guess to each their own here but my black cat and my mother's for that matter have been quite good. In fact the other day my mom's black cat had 6 baby kittens and one of them were black while the others pretty colorful. So that's more than a stroke of luck since our friends and other family members wanted cats of their own and now once these kittens come of age they will be able to have new homes and bring cheer and pet love to other people. Of course mom wants to keep the blackie to continue the good trend that she has had thus far!

I don't think people in the USA believe black cats are bad luck. It's a tradition that got started way back when. Maybe at one time people believed it. But now it's just part of the Halloween celebrations.

I used to have a black cat. He was the sweetest cat ever. He never brought bad luck, and he was super nice. He loved all people. Once I dropped a hot dog on the kitchen floor and he brought it to me. I guess he thought he was being helpful. The only thing was he was a stray at one time, and never would sit on laps. He would sit close to you but never on laps. That was the only issue with the black kitty. He could have done some lap sitting!
Posted by kgord on 09-15-2017
It is common knowledge that a black cat crossing your path is just a superstition. That it will bring you bad luck is just a myth. However, how many of us would ignore a black cat that blocks our path? I once had experienced that and it got me thinking. Maybe the superstition had penetrated my mind that's why I was kind of affected. It is easier said than done. A black cat may not bring us bad luck but it's still a concern nowadays.
Posted by Corzhens on 09-16-2017
Precisely it's more of a self-suggestion thing rather than a reality. I have always loved cats especially black one and I don't feel unlucky at all. Still, If you believe that something is real the chances of it becoming real is much bigger
Posted by Marvadaum on 09-20-2017
In our culture, the black cat is connected to scary things like bad luck or a harbinger of supernatural characters like a ghost or something like that. When my husband had a stint in London, he was shocked to see a big black cat in front of their door. It was after dinner and he would go out to smoke. Maybe it’s in our folklore that’s why my husband yelled for help from his colleagues. It was a funny incident just because of the symbol of that big black cat.
Posted by Corzhens on 01-20-2018
I think this is just a legend and honestly I do not see any relationship with the color of the cat with bad luck. If it were true, then white cats would have good luck. Anyway I do not like cats!
Posted by hermessantos on 09-17-2017
I never really understood this either, but I suppose I could see how it possibly could have gotten started. A lot of myths and superstitions really are kind of crazy when you think about it, but what's even more mind boggling to me is when I see people in modern times that still believe these myths. I try not to judge them, because I could just as easily have been one of those people if I had not gotten the education I got or the type of mentality I was lucky enough to acquire and develop, but I have to admit it's pretty difficult sometimes because it's just a bit too absurd and I find it really confusing how people relate certain things to certain superstitions without any real logical reasoning behind it.
Posted by Wubwub on 09-17-2017
It's just a superstitious belief. We own a black cat because his mother is our pet who has mixed colors. He was our only pure black cat and he is still alive unto this day and we didn't experienced any bad luck that happened into our family since he was born.
Posted by Scarlet on 09-18-2017
I often quite hear these kinds of things when I was still a kid although I haven't had any unfortunate experience if I have seen one cause I quite see a lot of black cats on my neighborhood lurking on every roofs of our house every night. Quite fascinated to hear that story though as I have never known why does seeing one turns out to be bad luck and I rarely believe in these kinds of superstitions that bring misfortune to a people. I might also add that its quite similar on receiving chain letters or message on your chat backs and really just a waste of time at all believing those things.
Posted by narutos3nn1n on 09-29-2017
I never consider a black cat as bad luck. It's all superstition. I pity the poor black cat for being hated because of a superstition. I believe that we create our own luck. Most of the things that happen to us is the result of our decisions. You will still get a bad luck even without a black cat passing in front of you if you make bad decisions or bad responses on things. I experienced seeing black cats pass in front of while I was trying to finish college. It didn't affect me at all. No bad luck for me. I was still able to finish my studies. I created my own luck by studying hard. I even graduated as an honor student.
Posted by Krisleen on 10-04-2017
Ever since I remember I always thought that a black cat was good luck and not bad luck! I haven't actually noticed having any particular good or bad luck when a black cat has crossed my path so maybe it is all a load of rubbish.

I have heard the story about the witch and the cat before in a village in the UK. Exactly the same story yet it can't have happened in two places. That tells me if the story is true, it didn't necessarily happen where some say it did.

I’m surprised to read your comment that over there, a black cat is a symbol of good luck. But I admire that opposite symbol because it is positive unlike here that black cat is a negative symbol of misfortune. As what my father would say, poor black cat, it has nothing to do with luck but it was being blamed. But that was only for children. Now, I guess even children don’t believe in that superstition anymore. That’s how technology had changed our life, culture and society.

Black cat is beautiful for me. It looks strong and mysterious. Their black color is nothing to do with the bad luck. This is just a superstitious beliefs of some people before to scare their kids to just stay in the house at night. If the black cat crossing your path and in hurry, maybe this cat is just looking for some better place to poop.
Posted by ion on 04-17-2018
No, it's just all superstition. It's sad that we associate black color as bad, bad luck, and sadness. It speaks about how people are starting to hate black people. We can't associate a color with humans and animals, just because they are black. Black cats are same as any other colored cats, they have lives, and living their 9 lives to the fullest.

Majority of the Filipinos believe the superstition that when a black cat crosses the path you are heading to, something bad will happen to you so it's better to return back. I grow up believing this superstition. But later in my life, I came across a verse in the Bible saying that superstitions are coming from the devil and believing it is a sin.

It is a superstition since a long time ago. I always remember my grandmother, even my mother, said to stay away from black cats. Encountering black cats brings bad luck. There are even times when black cats are seen crossing the road and the driver somehow, ended up on an accident. I personally haven't experienced this but I don't see something wrong of actively not believing it. So far, I haven't had bad encounters with a black cat.

I 'm not really a fan of cats. I find some of them super scary especially the ones that have weird color eyes e.g a mix of blue and grey, a mix of black and green. I ust find this color combination a little bit weird. In My Country cats are considered bad luck. Most cats are belived to belong to witches. I don't think that I am far off in my assumptions. If you read any fairy tales, all good witches have cats as their back up. I find black cats particularly scary. They really do look demonic. I'm sorry for all the cat fans. I just can't help how I feel.
