Blackboards

Blackboards
Travel with your memories years ago - it might be many years or just a few, or maybe it's actually the present - back when you were still in school. Ah so many memories, sto many stuff happening, so many friends and so many things learned! And so many teachers... Do you remember them? And do you remember when they were writing on that big black thing on the wall? Maybe it wasn't on the wall, maybe it was one of the classic chalkboards that you can move around, where you can send students behind it for punishment. Whatever it was, the characteristics were pretty much the same: rectangular, black, and you can write on it using chalks, small white sticks made with materials such as calcium sulfate or calcium carbonate. They were used in schools since the beginning probably, and the original form rarely had any form of evolution. Sure there were new types of boards installed (otherwise this versus wouldn't even exist), and the blackboards themselves changed shapes, sizes, sometime they were pinned to the wall sometimes they weren't. Sometimes they are even magnetic and you can put - what else? - magnets on them! The things you write with the stick, that you could consider basically dust stuck to the board, are easy to erase. Not just with the actual eraser, if you don't mind getting a bit dirty or dusty you can even cancel it with your hand or your clothes. You'll be covered in white dust afterwards, but nothing too bad. Blackboards are the classic chalkboards that you find in almost every classroom in fiction, and I doubt they are going to disappear soon.

  • Unlike markers, the blackboard sticks will never get dry...
  • Dust is easy to clean

Cons
  • ...but they will consume over time
  • Dusty
  • They often make a awful noise
  • Many students might have some allergies
  • It's harder to write with a chalk

Whiteboards

Whiteboards
Everything changes, everything have a evolution, and new stuff come in existence, or old stuff changes. Whiteboard is a bit of both of those, related to those theories. They aren't exactly blackboards, due to many differences they have, but they of course originated from them. They were born pretty recently and quickly met a raised popularity compared to the other boards - expecially during those golden years known as the 90s. Basically, a whiteboard is a white surface, where you can write using markers - no more sticks this time! Whiteboards can be really effective: on a white surface you can write with many colors - sure you can do that with multicolor sticks in blackboards too, but writing in red, blue, green or who knows what other color have a bigger impact if made on a white surface. And also when it's not in color, black on white instead of white on black gain more attention from the students. Whiteboards aren't used just in schools nowadays: many offices and professional meetings feature whiteboards used to explain stuff, to present new projects... All you need, after all, is a marker. And there is no dust this time! Sure, if you aren't careful you might get dirty even in this case with the marker you are using, but whatever you are drawing or writing will surely be seen with attention and admiration.

Pros
  • They are proven to be a effective teaching tool
  • They can also be used with projectors
  • No more chalk dust
  • It's easier to write with a marker
  • You can write with more colors
  • Using a marker to write is really easy

Cons
  • They aren't that large
  • After writing a long with markers the whiteboard might be a bit ruined, and erasing might become difficult, and you could see the previous signs of the previous writings or drawings
  • They aren't too big
  • Markers will get dry over time
  • The mess marker are able to make is hard to clean
  • Markers are smelly

Whiteboards win

They have drawbacks as pointed out in this post but they're easier to carry around and a lot more compact. People need that these days for presentations or news segments. Also chalk dust is an issue for people with allergies, asthma or breathing irregularities. A whiteboard helps avoid all of those problems. Marker is also a lot cleaner to write with, as opposed to chalk which leaves smudges on your finger tips. Overall, whiteboards are far more efficient for modern times.

Whiteboards are better

I personally like whiteboards better for a few reasons:

  1. They are cleaner. Chalk tends to leave dust and can get on your clothes. My sister has some pink chalk stain a white tshirt, so it can be messy.

  2. Whiteboards are easier to write on. Chalk tends to drag some. And when it does, it screeches. That sound dries me up the wall. Sounds just like nails on a chalkboard.

  3. My handwriting looks better on a white board. For some reason, my writing on a chalk board has always looked messy.

Whiteboards

Without a doubt it has to be a whiteboard as they are so much cleaner than black boards! Plus, blackboards make that horrible screeching sound when the chalk is drawn on it sometimes. Or, when you scrape your nails across it OMG! That makes me cringe in half! Whiteboards don't have any of that apart from a little squeaking of the pen on the board sometimes that sounds like a little mouse lol. They are just much cleaner and easier to draw on and wipe off without getting chalk dust everywhere. When you write or draw in chalk on a black board it's not the neatest looking thing and looks very grainy. Where as writing and or drawing on a whiteboard is much neater and more precise. Why we used to use blackboards with chalk right up to the late 90's is a mystery to me when they had marker pens and white boards. I think a lot of schools just couldn't be bothered to change them and it wasn't really in their budget to do so but there you go!

Whiteboards

Technically, neither are that good. We had interactive whiteboards which were great because you could use it as a way to view presentations from the teacher's computers or use it as a whiteboard with the special pen and whiteboard app that the hardware came with. It wasn't too expensive either. But if I had to choose from these two, the whiteboards would win it. Chalk is just too annoying

Whiteboards

White boards are less messy. Chalk boards are messy and you are breathing in all the dust. You have to dust the erasers and it is just messy. I always used a blackboard at school but we never had whiteboards. It was only later when I started using white boards at work that I realized how much more convenient that they are.

Far better

Without a single doubt, the whiteboards. I still remember when I was a kid and when I entered school. Every classroom had the blackboards because the whiteboards weren't even invented yet.

It was so annoying to clean it, extremely messy, the chalk dries out your hands and it gets very dusty.

During my education years, they luckily switched over to the whiteboards and I am very grateful. It's so easy to write and clean it, no dust or other issues. A clear winner.

Whiteboards

I was homeschooled growing up. Because of that, I've been around more whiteboards and markers, compared to blackboards and chalk. Personally, I've always found whiteboards to be neater and easier to clean. With chalk, it's often very dusty and may present allergies to certain people. I've also found them easier to write on compared to writing on blackboards. The most annoying thing about whiteboards, in my opinion, are the markers themselves. A lot of them run dry so you're forced to continuously buy new markers. Besides that, I have no problem with whiteboards.

Nearly perfect.

In order to make a proper decision, I channeled all those old memories of being in school, from elementary school to college. From elementary school to high school, the teachers only ever used blackboards. I suppose the schools didn't have the budget to upgrade, and chalk is probably cheaper than markers.

It wasn't until I reached college that I realized how much better whiteboards are. For one thing, they are so much easier to clean. Not to mention the environment around the board stays far cleaner because there isn't chalk going everywhere. But the greatest benefit was that a whiteboard doesn't make that ear piercing, soul crushing sound that chalk makes when you write on a blackboard at the wrong angle.

I get chills just thinking about that horrible sound.

Whiteboard

I love to see the whiteboard because it's easy to clean them. And we can use the board marker on them. And it can bring a lot of value as well. Another thing is that whiteboard requires a lot less efforts to clean too. So compared to the blackboard is definitely something I'd avoid in future if possible. It's better to evolved.

Whiteboards Are Better

I have actually been a teacher for 15 years now, and I am most familiar with white boards, of course; I do prefer them to chalk boards because, for some reason, I am very sensitive to chalk dust and calcite, and I have actually read theories that over-exposure to it can cause throat and lung cancer. Of course, breathing in dry erase marker fumes all day is probably ALSO bad for you, but I think that the chalk is most likely even worse. White boards are, for the most part, easier to clean and maintain than chalk boards. Still, if you can't teach your subject with just a piece of chalk, you probably should not be a teacher in the first place.

Cleaner

They are cleaner and better to see from a distance so I go with whiteboards here. Blackboards are just too messy and leave that toxic dust behind

I like whiteboards!

I rather use whiteboards because they are less messy than the regular ones. I hate using chalk! And with this invention I get to avoid it so good for the one who invented it. I use to have the 2 of them in my school, at the beggining we use the classic one but when they install the new one, it was a relief, no more mess, no more allergies and the most important part: no more chalk!

The white ones.

I prefer the whiteboards because the writing is always clearer and easier to understand (depending on who is writing... because some have a lousy letter, right? haha).

In addition, the projections that are reflected in them always become better visible and more enjoyable to be seen.

Clean.

Considering that white boards are the ones that are modern, the choice is simple, you can use a lot of tools on them and clean them off easily or even harder if you use a permanent marker for example, a black board is cool and all, cause it has a nostalgic feel for it and what not, but using chalk and cleaning it can be annoying, so white boards are the winners.

This ones

It's better and more practical than the blackboards. The chalk can cause allergy to some people and dirty fingers. The whiteboard is easier to erase and the handwriting can be clearer.

Whiteboards

I think whiteboards is more pleasing than the blackboards. I find the latter a bit unclean when you are to erase the writing in the boards compare to whiteboards.

Whiteboards for me!

The classical board we used before is the blackboards. I first see this when I was in my grade school. I remember before that I am always the one who is responsible in erasing the blackboard. For me, it is so hassle because of the dust coming from chalk. And after erasing, you must clean already the eraser because of the dust coming from chalks. So I am glad when I see whiteboards. I first see it in my college days until now. It is so smooth that you want to write there forever. Also, it is not hassle to erase it unless you use a permanent marker. So it is better to use whiteboards than blackboards.

No ashes

I prefer whiteboards because it is more cleaner and easy to erase not like blackboards many ashes well come out when you erase and also i have asthma not good for my health. whiteboard also produces much clear ink in the whiteboard marker it makes it more easy to see on what is written down on the whiteboard.

Better for me

I love both of the writing boards, they seems very in its usage and I definitely would be comfortable using any of the boards to carry out my writing task. But if I'm forced to make a choice between the two boards, then I would probably be preferring to have Whiteboards as they are more catchy when written on.

I prefer whiteboard.

Whiteboard is much easier to use and clean. It's also easy to write on. Unlike blackboards, whiteboards don't leave any residue when you clean it and you won't need to worry about getting an ink in your hand since you don't lean on the whiteboard when you're writing. We can't help but lean our hand on a blackboard whenever we write something on it and the chalk is so easy to break.

I always used a blackboard in school so I can't really vote for one of them, but the whiteboard looks nice and clearer. I don't think it really matters in the end, if you can read what's being written on it everything's fine.

Neither of them. Nowadays a new technology is being introduced in the schools. It's developed by Kent displays in America. The LCD panel on which you can write just like a paper by pressure sensitivity. Forget about the dust of chalk or the filling of marker to write on the white board.

Well, I would say that it depends on the writing materials to be used on either of the Blackboards or Whiteboards. If it's a black board, then I do believe that a while writing used in order to have a good effect, and if it's a white board, then black writing material is utmostly needed.

When I was in school, college and the university, the teachers and professors had to use blackboard, there was no choice for them except to breath chalk dust. However, when I enrolled in a computer course or language course, there were no blackboards, instead, the whiteboard was used. I think whiteboards are better than the black board.

Black board is stylish and all, but I have to chose White board, cause I'm allergic to dust, and it's cleaner, you don't wanna white chalk stains in in your brand new black jacket.

White boards definitively. I still remember the terrible mess with chalk and black board. There was white dust all over the place, and that mixed with kids it's just worst combination ever. My friends used to take the dust and make disgusting pranks with it, and my hands were really dry and itchy when I had to pass to the board. Maybe the only good point they have, is that those are more environment friendly, you don't have to buy markers or special products to clean them.

The only drawback with the blackboard is the white chalk and the dust that creates a mess. Otherwise, it is a cheap method of teaching with easy cleaning and minimal maintenance. On the other hand, the whiteboards are a bit expensive and have a limited working life. The marker pens need to be handled carefully and do not work for a long period of time. They need to be changed from time to time. This is the reason why I prefer using black boards.

Blackboards are old now. And a lot of people are choosing to move towards the whiteboard. And they seem to be easy to clean. And they also seem to be lot of less headaches. I have learned that blackboard requires better control over the cleaning. So you can see that it needs proper cleanup too. That's something people need to be understanding for the cleaning part. So better to use whiteboards.

I grew up with the blackboard, chalk and eraser. It is a common notion during my time that a teacher who is annoyed can throw at you, not the book but the eraser. Although in reality, all I saw was a teacher throwing the chalk at one of her students. And there’s also the student who was assigned to handle the chore of erasing the board. Those days are gone now with the emergence of the whiteboard which is very convenient especially with the marker in lieu of the messy chalk. And the erase is a simple rug. This is one progress that I really like.

I grew up with the blackboards but I have also used whiteboards in some cases. But for me I am more of a whiteboard even though it is cheap because It does really give me cough and irritation. And we wouldn't want that . It is far more convenient to use. I remember before that I would buy a box of chalk and store it in my bag and on the following day they are all broken and my bag is already tainted with the white chalks. Some are even colored chalks.

The whiteboard is the best at least one is sure of not moving around with chalk dust and charcoal like when blackboard is used.

whiteboard is neater when used with the marker.it makes a school look classy when in use and the marker last longer than the chalk because it can be refill and writing is smoother, neat and clear.

When I was still schooling back in 1970 and 1980s, our school used black boards. WHite boards were used for projector screen only in secondary school. Now my son who is in primary school is using whiteboard, no more blackboard days. That is better because chalk dust gets into the eyes and dirty the hands easily.

Lets tell ourselves the real truth, the blackboards are much better and effective than the white board because with the blackboard the students are more able to see clearly and this helps their sight to become stronger.

I would prefer using whiteboards because it is easy to write and erase. Using chalk in blackboards could be dangerous to the health of the teacher as well as the students. The chalk dust could be inhaled as the teacher writes on the blackboard and when cleaning the eraser. I have known teachers that have been severely ill because of using chalks on blackboard.

I have both experience with a blackboard and a whiteboard. I have no problem with handwriting since it is understandable that boards are not ruled like books. I prefer a whiteboard because using a marker won't leave stains on the hand unlike using a chalk. In addition, chalks leave powdered substance which cause irritation to the nose and chest when inhaled.

Both are fine, because it really depends on the handwriting of the teacher. Whiteboards are good for colors and diagrams, but pens do run out and fade. Chalk however is always visible and reliable as a teaching aid. Whiteboards are more common now, but blackboards are more practical because some people use permanent markers and damage whiteboards and they get stained far quicker than when a blackboard has a good clean.

I am allergic to dust and I remember the time when I was still at school there used to be blackboards. I used to have frequent allergies and for this reason, I had to sit at the back. At a certain point, the blackboard would get so dirty and it was a herculean task to clean it. As for whiteboards they can more easily be cleaned.

It's difficult to say which is worse for health. Some say the fumes from the ink from whiteboard markers are bad and, of course, the chalk dust probably isn't good either. Nonetheless, I think anyone really bothered by such stuff would be massively weak - cause how could it even compare to the damage of just a pack of cigarettes?

Anyway, whiteboards look more modern - so that's one big thing going for them. In fact, in most of my school life in grade school and university, nobody used blackboards. Does anyone use them now?
