Discord was built for the gaming community so gamers could interact with their friends whilst gaming. The discord app was solely based for gamers to chat with one another, however non-gamers are loving Discord's functionality, and features. Non-gamers are also loving the Discord App which makes it a great competitor for Skype.

  • Has a very clean UI design, that is easy to navigate and easy on the eyes
  • Offers free servers, so you don't have to pay for them (could also be a con if too many people are connected to the same server as it will result in slower response times)
  • Everyone can join group chats
  • Easily join chats with a single chat generated link
  • Will have future desktop sharing Twitch support (apparently there is some buzz about this, skype however fails to do this)
  • Create face-to-face video calls
  • Has a mobile app version
  • Can be used via browser via the browser app which you do not need to download
  • Can be integrated with bots to offer more functionality
  • Lower CPU usage than skype
  • Receive emails of latest missed messages from Discord app

  • No screen sharing (could possibly be enabled in the future, until it is this is a con)
  • Web version doesn't support Internet Explorer fully, which isn't too bad of a con because Microsoft is focusing more on their Edge browser and are discontinuing IE.
  • Video chat only works with the downloaded application, no browser plugin or flashplayer version of video chat *Browser voice chat is faulty, and appears to have issues that need to be fixed
  • CEO of Discord has been involved in large scams in the past

Discord for me now

I used to use skype a lot with my friends but when one of them found out about discord we all went and tried it out. At first there was a little confusion on how to use discord but after a little while we all new how it worked. Now we have basically burried skype in the backyard becouse discord is now our main program. For all of us it works a lot smoother and the connection is way more stable than that of skype. I can really recommend it to everyone who likes a good communication program.

Discord is the Best VOIP.

I dont understand how people can use Skype. Skype is so bad, literally if i find your account i can steal your ip in 10 seconds. Also the audio is horrible on Skype. Just Uninstall Skype and Install Discord! You brooms.

Best for gamers!

As a gamer with lots of friends that play online games, this is what we always use. This is better than Skype because it is easily accessible even if you don't have the app installed on your computer or smartphone. You can just access it directly on their websites. It is also less resource demanding according to our experience using it.

Discord looks and works better

I adopted Discord for gaming and love it. I love how there are servers/channels which have voice and text. It makes it very easy to chat with other gamers. The only thing I dislike about it is there is no spelling checking which is odd for an app in 2016.

I'm a gamer, so I prefer discord

I am a gamer, so I use discord to chat with my friends when playing games, but now I use it to chat with others who don't play games too, most of my friends like it because it is much easier, faster and better than skype.Having a lower cpu usage is another reason for me to use discord...

Really good!

Before Discord was made and became popular, I was a huge fan and daily user of Skype but ever since I've met with Discord, I haven't used Skype at all.

Discord is basically the better version of Skype - it has more features, uses less RAM while running, it's light, it's easy, it allows in-game integration, the quality of sound is WAY better and more.

Also, I love how easy it is to make your own server and community on the Discord. It's an amazing software. I have it open all the time.

Skype is a application that allows for you to make video calls, and chat with your friends, family or colleagues. Skype is one of the most popular chat messenger applications on the internet. Skype is owned by Microsoft and new computers automatically have the Skype application installed making it one of the most popular messenger applications in the world.

  • Owned by Microsoft, comes with new computers so you don't have to download the application upon purchasing a new computer
  • Easy to create video calls to chat with family, or friends face-to-face
  • Generally free unless you pay for international calling and/or Skype credits
  • Can be used and operated on many versions of Operating Systems
  • Has a mobile app version
  • Can screen share with user Skype users
  • Can be used via browser (you'll need a browser plugin to make skype video/voice calls)
  • Higher CPU usuage

  • You don't receive emails for missed messages as you would with the Discord App
  • Sometimes video calls, or even regular calls fail quite a bit, depending on who's hosting the call, and their internet connection quality and/or speed
  • Skype accounts get hacked a lot, refer to 'baidu hack/exploit' affecting hundreds to hundreds of thousands of people
  • A lot of message spam from bots wanting Skype users to click malicious links
  • Microsoft doesn't appear to fix low quality call issues, failed calls, and many other issues that need to be addressed and say it's the hosters connection resulting in low quality calls, however even hosters with great internet even sometimes drop a call
  • Can take awhile for computer to boot up if skype starts after initial boot

Even though I've heard great things about Discord, and I know several people who all are using Discord instead of Skype nowadays, I stick with Skype. However, if I play a game with several friends, then we usually use TeamSpeak instead of Skype. But I use Skype more often than anything else. - But I will probably take a look at Discord and try it out in the near future. It looks good.

I prefer Skype over Discord

Skype is widely used by everybody now. I used to be a Yahoo Messanger user but it slowly died over the years so I switched to Skype.

I don't use Discord that much because I believe that platform is made for gamers and I'm not much of a gamer.

Skype user here.

I am a gamer and I had heard of Discord but it was never something I ever found that I needed to use due to there being party chat on most game consoles now and also there being Skype which had all my contacts on. I use Skype daily to chat with friends both via text and via voice or video and I find it easy enough to use to keep in contact with my gaming friends as well as friends and family away from gaming. I would rather keep all my contacts in one place than have two seperate programs. I also find that many people use Skype as a first choice which is another reason why I stick with Skype, that way everyone has it and there are no problems.

Skype has come to stay, I like their services and they have paved way for other communication companies, I admire the management.

Skype for me!

Well, I never actually heard about Discord until I started messing around in certain multiplayer gaming circles. I haven't even installed it, nor plan on to. Personally, I'm happy with Skype as my means of communications for business and personal. I think Skype has majorly improved over the years, patching several glitches that have steered users away in the past. Yes, the CPU usage can be a bit. But overall, I feel Skype gives users more to offer. As well as provide a better customer support team compared to Discord. Just my opinion though.

I prefer Skype

I have been using Skype every Since the MSN got shut down. Despite some up grade problems I don't see anything wrong with Skype really. Simple to use and user friendly it's a bless to be able to talk to your loved ones from the other side of the world

Skype for now

Right now I would prefer to use Skype. I have had a hard time configuring Discord. I know that many people are using Discord especially gamers because it uses fewer PC resources. But my PC just can't make it work. It works well with my other PCs. I guess it's an isolated issue so I'll stick with Skype for now.

Is the first time I hear from Discord but it seems it's good enough and I should try it someday. With Skype... hmmm.... to be honest, I'm not very happy with it, the quality of video calls is not the best and you cannot have a group video chat if you haven't paid. Lately, it has been very unstable for me so I want to try other options.

I'm in a gaming community that has used Skype for several years and, while Discord allows custom emoji, a lot of the people in the community grew attached to some of the animated emotes of Skype. Discord doesn't allow animated emoji, so even though I can port still images of Skype's emoticons, some of them lose their meaning (at least, vanilla Discord--I don't know about Nitro or Canary).

I cannot say anything about Discord because I have never used it. I have used skype and it is an amazing VOIP program. I think Skype has it all for people of different walks of life.
Posted by vinaya on 12-15-2017
I think Discord is okay for gamers since it was designed for them. But for ordinary people like me, Skype is the better choice. I think I had tested Skype in 2006 or 2007 when it was fairly new here so that I had no one to talk to at the time. But later on, when my friends have their own Skype connection, it became a common communication call primarily because it is for free as long as you have an internet connection. But now Skype is having a good fight with Messenger and Viber.
