Ground floor

Ground floor
In the middle of the city, or maybe in a little town, there is a very tall building. It's various story tall, or maybe it's of average size... It reaches the clouds, or it's just a small building. It doesn't matter the height, in any case, since you don't live up up there!

You live on the ground floor! You enter the building, maybe you walk in a corridor to reach your apartment and then you're in.

No stairs to walk on, no creepy elevator... maybe just a few steps outside and you're good to go!

Of course living in a ground floor is possible also in detached houses, terraced homes... anything that have more than one floor, literally! But heaven is far away, and the ground floor is not it. There are indeed a few disadvantages, first of all being home humidity. Being at the ground floor could you make you pretty sick of it and pretty quick, is the house isn't designed well enough. Besides, thieves. They won't target a house in the last floor or a high building: ground floor apartments are a easiest victim to rob! Of course, alarms and stuff like that could prevent them for entering your private reign... but you never know.

And don't even start about noisy neighbors... can't they took off their boots?

  • No stairs, never and ever
  • In case there is some danger you can escape quickier
  • If you don't live in a building you might even have your own courtyard just outside of your house

  • Noisy neighbours on upper floors
  • Might experience a lot of house humidity
  • Thieves might target your apartment more than upper floors

more secure

While the view at the top floor of a tall building is beautiful, I feel more secure on the ground floor. In case of emergency or a fire it's not hard as hard to exit the building. You also don't have to walk up stairs or wait on an elevator to get to your hotel room, apartment, or office when you are at ground floor level. You can also easily and quickly access the city streets outside from the ground floor. Overall, I prefer the ground floor level for many reasons.

Ground Floor

I lived on the top of floor of an apartment complex while I was in college. I loved the view, and it was nice not having someone living above me who I could hear walking around stuff, but I think there are other things that outweighed those pros.

Having to carry groceries and other items up several flights of stairs (my complex didn't have an elevator) was terrible, especially when I had to make a lot of purchases. Things like furniture were a nightmare to get up and down the stairwells when I was moving in and out as well.

Ground Floor

In a developed country I would definitely pick the top floor since it definitely has a better view than the bottom floor, but in an undeveloped country where blackouts generally frequent, never. Walking up 10 or even 20 flights of stairs is a cancer you're not ready to know about, trust me I've done it. Not to mention all of the safety you pass up by not being on the ground floor especially in a fire.

comfortable and more grounded

Though the scenery looking out from the top floor should be much more beautiful, I actually prefer to stay at the ground floor. I just think it's more comfortable and nearer to the entrance. Once I step in the house, it's where I stay and I don't need to climb up the stairs or take any lift to reach my home. I just feel I am more grounded and firm when I am stepping on the ground floor.

Ground Level

I love to be on the ground floor if possible. As you can see it is possible for the floor to easily accessible. As you age, it'd be not good for you to go through the lift. And for this reason I think being on ground level is always better. I think for those who are ageing it's reasonable to be on the ground. And that's the good for the people who have the height phobia.

Ground floor for fire escape

I am a ground floor person forsure. Although I have never been involved in a fire. I have seem some grisly aftermath and many of the people were upstairs couldn't get out and burned alive. That's why I ask for a ground floor every time I get a new apartment.
Posted by Soulwatcher on 10-31-2017

I don't trust being that high up off the ground so as much as I can I'd like to live closer to the ground. It's just unfortunate that these days all people can buy are condos and almost all the houses are already either extremely expensive or owned. I will perhaps move somewhere cheaper in the future so I can just live in a regular house instead of a condominium unit.

Peace of mind.

Living on the ground floor is always a way for me to have rest of mind especially when I am just coming back from the office. I don't really want to live in a place where I will have to climb much stairs before I will enter my house as it is a big work to me to do as well. I always want to stay where I can easily move out and return with less stress.

Since then i like the ground floor apartment because if there is a fire or earthquake you can easily get out from the apartment. and also if there is a emergency health issue you will not be having a hard time in getting out. specially when the elevator is broken. i also like the fact that ground floor is very near in the exit point.

Top floor

Top floor
A quiet relaxing evening, after a pretty hard day full of job, full of annoying people. But now you are here, with a beer right off your fridge, sitting on a coach looking outside at your window, or maybe you are on the balcony. And you look up: you see a sky full of stars, and you look down... and the city is right there, you could hold in on your hand. The distant cars wandering around with who knows what destination, the little tiny people that don't even know you are watching. You feel like you are the king of this place: that's the feeling you get for living on the top floor of this building!

Even if you are on the top floor of a relatively small house it's still amazing: you don't have anyone on top of you, you dont' have to worry about steps of neighbours at night... Nothing will bother you.

But of course this have a cost! Flashback to when you came into your house, or flashforward to when you'll come out of it. Stairs, stairs and lots of stairs! Sure there might be an elevator, but what if it's broken?

And the weather will be your enemy: in winter you feel much more cold, in summer your house will be a lot hotter than other houses. And when it's raining you might as well take a shower if there are some infiltrations. You might be closer to the heavens, but nothing will be that much perfect.

  • You will feel like the king of the city looking outside of your window
  • Usually there is more light during the day: no annoying building projecting their shadow nearby
  • No neighbours on floor above yours - because there is none

  • Stairs
  • The weather won't be your friend
  • Thieves have also a easy access here, from balcony or terrace

Top floor

I prefer the top floor because of the fact that you can get a good view of the surrounding area and it's also great to be higher up in the sky. I'm not a huge fan of the ground floor because if you have a tiny bit of flooding, your place will be flooded and you are much more likely to be targeted by thieves as well.
Posted by kingcool52 on 10-22-2017

Less risk of flooding and quieter

I've lived in dorms on the ground floor and I found it noisy and also there is a lack of privacy as people could break in and see into your windows. I prefer higher levels, not just because of the flood risk but also there will be less chance of a noisy neighbor above you.

I have always preferred top floor. Makes me feel important and superior. Also, has a nice view to go along!
Posted by Marvadaum on 10-23-2017

To the top.

I hate the idea of ??having to live on the ground floor. I can't explain it right, but it's something that bothers me a lot (I know this is weird, but it happens). Living on the top floor will always be the best option for me (because it gives me a sense of freedom).

Love on top!

Ever since I was a kid, I always dreamed to lived on top. For me, to be on the top floor of a building, it feels like you are the king of the city. Also you can see the perfect view from the top rather than in the ground floor. It's also too much hassle in the ground floor because almost all of the people are living there. I want to experience other ways of living. So if I will be given a chance to live on the top floor, I will grab it.
Posted by blank629 on 11-04-2017

Top Floor

I've lived in many apartments over the years and I love the top floor. You get exercise, you avoid flood damage, you avoid water damage cause a neighbor upstairs flooded a bathroom or had sewage issues, avoid sewage issues in general since everything goes down, avoid flood issues that ground floor has. You also avoid easy break ins, thefts and people damaging your property. Plus it's warmer during winter. However the downsides is potential fire issue and it gets hot during summer.

To the Top Please

As much as it's very easy to live in the ground floor, I definitely wouldn't be seeing myself make such decision ever again right after my first experience with those living at the top floor.

They made it a point of duty that I couldn't live in peace while I was at the ground floor. They pour down water to the ground floor, sweep dirt down to it, throw down garbages to the floor. These are definitely a good lesson for me never to live in the ground floor ever again.

Posted by Heatman on 10-22-2017

All the way to the top!

I love going/living on the top floor as it gives me a relaxing view and nice sunshine when I stay with one of my relatives condominiums. It's also my dream place to live in when I can afford it. I also want the swimming pool to be on the top floor as well even the restaurant. There's a lot of good feelings you will whenever you're on the top floor as it also feels like you're flying and everything is so tiny and within your reach.

More Ventilation!

Ground floors has poor ventilation compared to the top floors. For the people who is claustrophobic, it is very important to be in a place which is highly ventilated and spacious. Yes, being in the ground floor is ideal if an earthquake or a fire happens. But how many times does an earthquake or fire occur? Aside from that, Top floors has much more breathtaking views.
Posted by JB Fernandez on 02-08-2018

Who wants to be on the ground anyway? I wpuld like to be on top. Top floor enables one see the world from top. One can relax on the balustrade as they inhale fresh air.

When on top stair you can easuly spy an enemy before they reach up. Intruders may just reach the below stairs.

Posted by stbrians on 10-10-2018

The view

Being on the top floor means being able to see the whole surroundings and where you can just be on the open air. It is also fun and exciting to see such events like fireworks or light shows or anything similar to that. I mean who would not pick the top floor? It is dangerous but yet again you are living your life to the fullest.

Ground floor. I think the highest I'd go in a building with no elevator? Would be the fifth floor. In a building with an elevator... I wouldn't mind the 8th floor. But my PREFERENCE is always the ground floor. It's easier to get furniture in and out, groceries, also better for visitors too. Believe it or not, some people won't visit you that often if they have to climb flight after flight of stairs to get to your apartment... And despite what some may think, not every apartment building has an elevator either.
Posted by NickJ on 10-22-2017
That’s also my take in a building – what if the elevator is not working? When our office moved to a new building, our department was assigned to the 10th floor. Where before we were in the 3rd floor, it’s not a big problem when there is power outage and the elevator was not working. But now, we have no choice but to either wait for the electricity to come back or use the stairs. I cannot imagine myself climbing 10 stories. That might kill me huh.
Posted by Corzhens on 07-09-2018
I think that it is better to live on the ground floor. I usually feel dizzy whenever I use the elevator and if this is something that I will have to do everyday then it will cause great inconvenience to me. I live in a hot country and the ground floor apartment is always cool in winter and there is no need to use the air conditioner.

In all honesty - having experienced living in both ground floor and penthouse apartments - fortunately only for a short time - I wouldn’t even consider either of these options.

Particularly as - living in an environment where - whether you like it or not - you have no choice but to constantly listen to your neighbors every move - either above or below you - and sometimes with a great deal more detail than you would actually wish to know about - let alone hear - is to me - not conducive to having a good quality of life by any stretch of the imagination.
Posted by gata montes on 10-22-2017
I have lived on both and I guess living on the top depends on how high the building is. I do not have a fear of heights but I have had people visit me who would not go out on that balcony because they didn't like being that high and looking down. They didn't feel safe. I loved the view on the top. The ground level has its advantages because you don't have to deal with stairs or elevators but the view is not much. I would always picture being on the top if I have a choice.

When I was without kids I preferred the top floor because of its quietness and neatness at all times.People downstairs are sometimes excessively loud and I'm not good with noise but with the coming of the kids, we had to look for a down apartment.I didn't want myself having HBP looking out for the kids' at all the times. So for now till the kids are all grown, I will be only having down apartment.
Posted by lovely on 10-22-2017
1st floor would be my preference. Although never lived in a flat or something. But if given a chance then 1st would be the ideal spot as it's at least above than the usual norm. Still you get to go where ever you want.

Imagine how much time in ones life is spent going up and down, i'm used to the floor. I hate the top floor cause I meet always people I don't like in the elevator.
Posted by joey98 on 10-22-2017
If the building where you have your apartment is very tall, it is better to live on the top floor. There are a couple of drawbacks of living on the ground floor if the building is very tall. The people living upstairs will create many disturbances while moving in and out of the building, you will also be disturbed with sounds from upstairs. The ground floor is prone to dust and dirt. When you are living on the top floor one one will come to you to disturb you.
Posted by vinaya on 10-22-2017
When it comes to building, I would like to take the top floor as long as that is going to give me the serene environment of working in the office. I understand the need of some people that need the ground floor in order to connect with clients easily, but I don't think that I will be needing that any moment from now.

I think people who have lived in bungalow are going to love the life in the bungalow. And it can be good enough in many ways. You can see that ground floor can be good enough for many ways for the ageing people. So ground floor based of the hotel. And another thing is that top floor is something good for the young and the middle aged people. That's the thing we have to understand as well.
Posted by overcast on 10-23-2017
To be honest, I never dreamed of living in a residential building because what we prefer is a traditional home with a garden. But if I had to choose between living on the ground or top floor, I would probably prefer the ground floor. Power outages occur here without notice. It will be a pity when you are living on the top floor and the elevator is not working. Worse, you can be trapped in the elevator when there is a sudden power failure. At least in the ground floor, you are safe and the accessibility is very convenient.
Posted by Corzhens on 10-23-2017
There's benefits to both so I can't say which is better. Living on the ground floor is nice because it's usually cooler and you don't have to climb a flight of stairs to get home. But it's also an easier target for theft. Living on the top floor is nice because you get a view and you're less likely to get robbed. However, it gets a little hot in the summer because you're up higher. You also have to climb stairs everytime to go home. It's a little more work than living on the ground floor.

I have experienced living in both ground floor and top floor. When we lived in top floor, my little sister used to fall down the stairs frequently and so we decided to move to ground floor permanently. We also used to experience water shortage in top floor and those who lived below us never missed water. Apart from that, climbing up and down the stairs was tiring sometimes but it felt good to live up there.

Now that we live in ground floor, life has become more easier since we do not climb the stairs anymore and we also do not have to worry about the kid falling again. The only problem is noise from our neighbor who lives above us especially when they put loud music.
Posted by mildredtabitha on 11-03-2017
The top floor. The penthouse, please! In a building that has an elevator. In this case my own elevator. I want the whole top floor to myself. I want to be somewhere where the view is beautiful and spectacular. I want to breathe clean air. I want to be close to the sky and God. I want to meet people only when our eyes meet from the window. In fact, i hope I have my own entrance or even better a helipad.I want to fly, to and from the top of the building. If stairs are the only choice or the elevator is not working, at least I 'll be getting some exercise.
Posted by jaymish on 11-13-2017
A problem about living on the highest floor is that the units at that level tend to be hotter during the summer because they are the first to directly receive the sun's rays. As if this were not enough, if the elevator of the building is turned off or is in maintenance, you will have to climb all the floors until you reach your apartment. It may be healthy, but you will not think the same if at that moment you carrying many heavy things in your hand.
Posted by mcnasci24 on 12-11-2018
I don't like either of them! I think the ground floor is more comfortable to live on as you don't have to use an elevator or stairs but you are closer to the streets and you can hear the traffic or whatever happens outside. It is also more accessible for robbers. Top floor on the other hand is right under the roof so it is very hot there in the summer and cold in the winter.
Posted by felabruno on 12-02-2017
I have been into different house building because me and my family often changing home, but I haven't tried staying at the ground floor. In fact, my family usually choose the available one from the top floors. And I don't actually know why they always choose at the top floors. But I actually prefer the ground one because it is easier to go outside of the building and in case there's an emergency we can easily get out right away. And we don't have to get tired for stair walking. There are only about 5 floors (maximum) usually when we change address so there's no elevator.

I prefer single detached house than live in a condo where you share with a lot of people. Ground floors seem cluttered for me and busy, not a typical place to rest. Top floor may be better because it's more peaceful I guess but the access from the outside world is harder as you have to use stairs or elevators.
Posted by Chinet23 on 09-21-2018
Some may say that living on lower floors is safer (in case of earthquakes, for example), others will say that high floors have better benefits (better view). The truth is that each floor of the building has a number of disadvantages, as well as advantages.
Posted by mcnasci24 on 12-11-2018
Top floor unit will (probably) have better light and a better view if there's anything to see. Does the top floor unit have ANY outdoor space like a small deck? If not i'd probably go ground. If the ground floor unit is below grade, I'd be concerned about things like flooding or mold from groundwater/moisture.
