If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you most want with you?

If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you most want with you?
This is one of those age old questions. No one ever knows why you would be stranded on a deserted island... perhaps there was a plane crash and you survived, perhaps your missed boarding your cruise ship when everyone else left, Perhaps you decided to go on "Naked and Afraid", or maybe aliens abducted you and then left you in the middle of nowhere on a lovely island. Doesn't matter how or why you're there. What matters is, if you could have any one item there with you, what would it be? Would you choose something practical like a pot for boiling water or a machete? Would you choose something sentimental like a family photo or favorite clothing item? What would you wish to have with you?

I think all I would want is to have a means of calling for help. Living all alone on an island is the last thing I would want in my life. So, all I would focus on is to call for help and leave the deserted place at the earliest. I'm not a loner and cannot survive without my family. I would prefer to die if I cannot get back home.

I think a mirror to make signs with sunlight, a bonfire or a flag would be right for you. Of course the best would be a satellite phone and the possibility of passing your coordinates.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I would have my wife with me. If I have my wife with me nothing in the world will trouble me. having my wife with me in an island means I will have a good company, I will have extra hands to help me. I will also have someone with who I can have babies. And one day when the babies will grow, we will all build a raft and sail away. LOL
Posted by vinaya on 08-11-2017
This really strikes me as very interesting. I like your point of view. I would never have thought of that!
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I also liked your idea. You want a mirror to send signals so that you can be rescued. satellite phone will also be a good option, however, you also need something to keep your satellite phone charged.
Posted by vinaya on 09-19-2017
Having water would be my major concern because it would probably buy me a longer survival time. Having a means of calling for help might be good but where you gonna say you are at when it's most likely that you don't know where. If I have water I could probably try to catch some edible sea creatures that would keep me going. If I had food and no water then I would probably die from thirst or dehydration.
Posted by explorerx7 on 08-11-2017
I think water is really the most important. I think it's the main item to keep well enough to build your own resources and leave the island or ask for help.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I agree. Water is best choice to bring. And also lighter and knife if i still have a chance.
Posted by zheh on 08-18-2017
It's hard to choose only one item in such condition, Because to survive coldness you would need Trees to make fire and that's when you need machete which can also be used in case of attacks by bad people or animals plus you can even use the machete to hunt if you don't have a gun, And then to survive dehydration you will need water So for me if it's on an island means there is water around then I would choose to have a gun to protect myself just in case I need it and while I look for a way to get out:-)
Posted by Clara1993 on 08-11-2017
Having a gun on a desert island does not seem very interesting. I think you probably will not use it. I think a knife would be interesting, but a firearm would be unfeasible. Drinking water would be the most important thing in my opinion.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I would want to have a functioning communication tool. This way I can call and have someone to talk too. I will not go crazy then if I am like this.
Posted by fishmonk on 08-12-2017
That really would be very important. But I think you also need the means to survive until the ransom arrives. Maybe access to clean water would be the important thing in my opinion.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
In that particular scenario, survival is my main goal so I'll be so relieved if I would have a machete or a knife by my side. With a machete or a knife, I know I could build things to ensure my survival out there in the wild.
Posted by Neiltarquin on 08-12-2017
I also have the same opinion as you. I think a good tool like a knife, can help me build a shelter and even create mechanism for potable water.

I can't live without a cellphone. I'm thinking of choosing cellphone so I can call for help. But its an island, there could be no signal there, it means cellphones will be useless. A knife, a match, water, foods, ropes, tent are things we need to survived. I also need a companion to help me to survived in an island because honestly I don't know anything about survival. I really don't think I can survived in an island with just one thing in my hand. A bag of survival kit is what I need with a friend who have knowledge in survival.
Posted by rose thornes on 08-12-2017
You probably could not survive on a desert island alone. That's something to think about!
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
rose thornes
True. Lol. I probably won't last a week if ever I got stranded in an island alone. I don't even know how to make fire so I might die in cold.
Posted by rose thornes on 08-12-2017
I would say a single charter boat equipped with a full crew and captain ready and willing to sail me anywhere I want to go in the world, including home! I know that's double wishful thinking. I would probably want one of those magic bags that can make anything appear out of thin air. I put my hand in and pull our a condo or hotel or submarine. It's hard to say the one thing I would like to have because building and acclimatizing and surviving in the unknown can require a whole list of things. A machete would come in pretty handy but some firesticks would do the trick for me in lighting a strong fire. Some good strong protective clothing can do the trick as well plus hiking shoes. Perhaps a water filter or desalination plant just in case there's no fresh water. Interesting, I'm thinking more like the single government of this island that I may have found myself stranded on. Perhaps I can reach out to other governments for a bail out package and choose to invest in agriculture, lands and fishery to stir my single island economy!
Posted by Joteque on 08-12-2017
If you didn't say an item, I would have easily picked my partner since I think that he would be perfect. He's my rock and he would make the whole stranded thing ten times less depressing.

But since you said an item... hm, I guess a phone wouldn't work there? Since there wouldn't be any signal... so I don't know. I already know how to make fire so that wouldn't be needed. I think I would pick either a water filter since I don't know if there was any fresh water around OR a machete to be able to build my shelter and defend myself.
Posted by Mehano on 08-12-2017
I think access to clean water is the most important in this type of scenario. Then access to food and shelter are also items of great importance.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
Maybe what I would wish for is someone to keep me company. I will not say any member of my family for that is biased already. Anyone, man or woman, young or old, as long as he would keep me company and provide me with someone who I can talk to. It is scary to be stranded alone in an island because of the predators like snakes and wild animals. At night, it is easy to imagine imaginary creatures like monsters and ghosts. So if I have company then I'm sure I will be okay.
Posted by Corzhens on 08-12-2017
This is interesting! However, I think the other person must also have the minimum of survival skills to be able to help you on this journey.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
If it occurs to me, it wouldn't be a joke.Being all alone on the Island without anybody to talk to will definitely be a prison sentence, trust me! Let me crack a little joke here: Hadn't be it occurred to me in the Bible time when the children of Isreal are all alone in the desert and God is feeding them daily and angels following them, I can still be pleased with staying at the desert because God will be there to feed and help me as well. Being on the island all alone is not a joking stuff and it's the last thing that will ever happen to me in life. The first thing I will do is to look for food & water in order to survive and find any possible means to cry out for help immediately.
Posted by Gettingmile on 08-12-2017
I think getting water and food is the most important. Faith in God is also fundamental, for wherever you are, God will be watching you. Just have faith always!
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
If I can freely choose one, I would choose a multi-purpose-life-saving kit or box who has all the essentials and necessary things which you need to survive alone in an island. Because nobody can live alone and survive if you only have one item.
Posted by galegatling on 08-12-2017
Yes! It is possible to survive with just one item or even nothing. The most important are your survival skills and not the tools you have. You can have thousands of items, but if you do not know how to use them, you'll surely die on the island.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
well if I'm on a tropical island I would imagine that it's fruit on that island, Food is important, and clean drinking water. It's hard to say one thing. I would like to have tools to build a boat or a raft.
Posted by kamar19 on 08-12-2017
Fruits are interesting! But you can not rely solely on them. Drinking water is undoubtedly the most important. Creating a shelter and flagging the island are also important points to survive and get out of the island alive.

A difficult choice to make but if restricted to just one item - I think I would choose a decent sized knife - simply because - as it would be an extremely useful aid for making the tools needed to provide - shelter, fire, food, clothing etc and having those things would make life somewhat more pleasant - its highly likely that I’d manage to survive.
Posted by gata montes on 08-12-2017
I also agree with you! A knife is able to help create shelter, clothes and even mechanisms for capturing drinking water. I think that would make a lot of difference in survival.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I think spending time with the family and friend on the island can be good time. I have seen people who spend more time on island and then enjoy in water and going away. So it all depends on how the time is being spent. I can tell you that island is one good experience to have with your loved ones. I am not sure if everybody is going to be in that set of direction. That's to consider as well.
Posted by overcast on 08-12-2017
From what I understand in this topic, we are talking about a situation where you are alone on the lost island and not just traveling. The question is: What would you take to the island?
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
Personally 'I'd take my hunting knife. I know that 'i'd be able to hunt any kind of animal with it and also defend myself against wild beasts. If I didn't have it then I'd most likely have to craft one myself and my survival odds would be lower. There is no replacing the essential survival basics.
Posted by Marvadaum on 08-12-2017
I also agree with you! A good knife is able to help provide food, shelter, fire and even helps in creating mechanisms to get clean water. For me, a knife would also be ideal on a desert island.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I think I would want a way to filter water. I would need a clean water source. Without clean water you would surely die in a short period of time. I mean eventually you would have to figure out how to make a fire, but I really think water would be your most pressing need. I would hope my time on the island would not be long though. It would be a hard way to live your life!
Posted by kgord on 08-12-2017
Water is undoubtedly the highest priority on a desert island. I think a simple canister would help in filtering the water.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I would love to have someone to keep me company. I can't live in isolation. I always need people around me. Having someone by your side to support you is a great thing. The other person can also share his ideas with me and we can hunt or fish together. If I ever fall sick I know that there will be someone to look after me.
Posted by Pixie on 08-12-2017
I think the ideal would be to have a person who has survival skills. Instead, I preferred to be alone.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I guess I am more practical and I would take with me a lighter. This object would help me to make a fire and keep warm at night and the most important thing it would help me to cook some fish or any food I have that is needed to be cooked.
Posted by wallet on 08-12-2017
I think a lighter would be useful only in the short term. You can be trapped for months on the island and the scythe can end the gas. Maybe a flint would be more ideal for you.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I would want my fiance with me. He is very resourceful and has much better survival skills then I do. We go a lot of tenting together so it would be similar when it comes to survival. He is also a real good fisherman and cook which would keep is fed. We work good together as a team so there is no better person to be stranded with on an island.
Posted by Sue on 08-12-2017
This seems very interesting to me, mainly because you have a person who really understands sobrivencialismo techniques. I think you would be very lucky on this kind of journey.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
Bobby Cole
If everyone here had thought really hard, I am absolutely certain that they would have come to the same conclusion as I.
When a person is alone and stranded, all that is needed is a deck of playing cards and some knowledge of how to play solitaire.

That may sound absolutely silly to some but most of us know that when we start playing a good game of solitaire, there will always be someone who suddenly appears to tell us that we missed a play. There now, we are rescued.
Posted by Bobby Cole on 08-12-2017
A dog or another person. Sanity is the first step to long term survival so it is important to have something to remind you of why you are trying to survive.
Posted by Lukevukovic on 08-12-2017
A dog probably will not help you find clean water. I understand that sanity is important, but first you need basic items like water, food and shelter.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I would want a working phone or some sort of internet / technology so I could seek help !!
Posted by simplym on 08-12-2017
That sounds really funny. But it is impossible to think that you would have access to a telephone or the internet on a deserted island. If the island has internet access, it probably will not be deserted. LOL
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I think if I had a good knife, I could certainly survive without much difficulty. With a knife it is possible to make a shelter, cook, make fire, among other tasks.
Posted by hermessantos on 08-12-2017
I thought to myself that I want my loved one with me but I don't want to cause her trouble so I'm going to settle with a means for communication, or just a survival knife OR a lighter. I'm hoping to stay alive long enough to be rescued by passing ships or planes. If not, I'll have to make a boat and use it as a last resort.
Posted by giovanniiiii on 08-13-2017
I need fire, with fire I could make a camp fire where I could cook food or boil rain water to drink. A lighter with lots of fuel or match box will do. I could use fire to chase away wild animals and to keep myself warm too.
Posted by peachpurple on 08-13-2017
This is really a very hard decision to make. When it comes to the deserted island questions I'm so used to being able to pick at least a couple of items. But just one? That is going to be a tough one. I suppose if I could only choose one thing it would be a container for water. You can get by utilizing a lot of materials on the island, but fashioning a good container for when you find fresh water would be something a bit difficult to do, as far as my survival knowledge goes.
Posted by Denis_P on 08-14-2017
I was going to say some way to get fresh water once I read the title. Yes, a pot to boil water sounds like a good idea. You could also use the pot to cook food and to have hot water for cleaning and disinfecting things. Those seem like the most important aspects of survival. Surviving would be my first consideration.
Posted by Zyni on 08-15-2017
Being stranded on an island is quite problematic. Survival is first things first. If I'll be stranded, then I'll be long dead. If I am to take something with me, it would be a person. Haahaha! Two brains are better than one, then maybe I'll be able to survive then.
Posted by DanoCath on 08-15-2017
Well the first thing to do is look around for something to protect yourself with, because you never know what island you could be inhabiting, there are animals that could potentially harm you or even tribes. Then the next wisest decision is to look for food and water and possibly create shelter, because you never know what the weather conditions would be and when you could get saved. Of course when you've settled then you should start looking for help.
Posted by manmad on 08-16-2017
I would like to have any kind of weapon, like a knife or a machete, to defend myself from other living things or I can use it to hunt or build something to live or escape of the island, like a boat or something like that.
Posted by cubo on 08-16-2017
I would happily escape to the inhabited island with my partner and my family members. Company of the most beloved people is the only thing I need, whenever I am in comfortable apartment or bamboo hut on a tiny island. Together we will definitely find a solution how to enjoy stress-free life on our island.
Posted by RosieCheeks on 08-17-2017
A gun with huge bullets for hunting animal and to burn those for taking as a food. On an Island when I am single I will be need a firebox also. These 2 will make me safe from any types of trouble. Bangladesh have an Island as like as this where you will get this types of trouble. Like Saint martin, Hatiah, Nijhum Dip.

Thanks Centurion
Posted by centurion on 08-17-2017
I would take matches (or a lighter, that way I could make a fire to produce drinking water from the sea as well as cook my seafood. In addition, the fire would keep me warm and hopefully alert boats to my location. I am sure I would be able to build a shelter so that would not be an issue.
Posted by Rhombus on 08-18-2017
Well sentimental items, even if they could help you on a psychological level, can't really help you in those cases. Self defence items might be more useful, but if there is no actual danger I waste my choice. A practical items would be my choice, then, but even then there are so many useful items that could help! I thought about this for a while, then I realized that the most expert survivalist manage to survive with the tools that nature provide them. I think I would bring some kind of survival handbook, that could give me tips on how to use what the island offer me (hoping there is indeed something useful). Otherwise, I might bring a baloon to name Wilson and to talk with.
Posted by Xilkozuf on 08-27-2017
I think I will request for my bible for prayers, with just this item I will rest-assured that nothing would go wrong because I would hold God to his word that he will be with all times and that he should honor his word.I know he would give me wisdom on how to sailed away.
Posted by lovely on 08-31-2017
Personally, I'd bring my trusty hunting knife along. I could use it for hunting, for defending myself, for crafting survival items and cracking coconuts open. So many uses that I wouldn't want anything else with me but it.
Posted by Marvadaum on 08-31-2017
Well if i am allowed to bring a person, I'd obviously bring the one I love so being there would feel like a paradise. If I must pick an item i have literally no idea what i would take with me...perhaps a survival guide, even tho i doubt that would be of any use, maybe it would help with the fire... who knows.
Posted by AlexLapusan on 09-05-2017
I want water the most if ever I get stranded on an island. As we know, water is life , so it's what I will need to live. When in a situation like that what is foremost is for you to survive until rescue will arrive. Thus, water will sustain me while help isn't available yet.
Posted by SimplyD on 09-07-2017
for me i would like to have my girlfriend with me on a island where we are stranded then we have to survive like those movies using rocks to rub just to produce fire and fish to catch for food. it would be a memorable experience but i hope we could survive.
Posted by tophew on 09-10-2017
I never imagined to be stranded in an island and if it will happen to me. I don't know what to do because I have no companion on that island. Then if I will choose what material thing should I have during my stay. I will choose machete where I can use it to build a hut as my shelter, search for fruit trees and self protection for unexpected wild animal attacks.
Posted by rogel on 09-10-2017
If i am stranded on an island then the most important thing i will like to have with me will be a mobile phone to call for help from anywhere and also i will like to have a snack of food to be eating before i finally get help.
