Is it worthwhile to invest in a security system or camera ?
Last night, we had someone break into our car and they stole over $50 worth of brand new mirrors that we had inside on the back seat. Since we never keep anything of great value in the car, and we would rather that someone just open the door and steal the change as opposed to breaking the windows to get in; so we seldom ever lock up the vehicle. We have never really had any problems until the last few months, but we thought it was just kids because all they ever did was take the change we had lying in the car. One time, someone cut my visor case off; but there really was not anything in it to steal. However, yesterday, we purchased some mirrors to put up on the wall, and because we needed to rearrange some furniture to access the wall easily, we left the mirrors out in the car. Well, this morning, they were gone, and we know that this was not likely just kids looking for a bit of cash. That brings me to the subject of this thread, and that is home security video cameras. We decided to order one from Amazon, and it was $30 for the one camera. It has an app and connects to either a smartphone, tablet, or even a computer. We can watch live camera ant time we want and from anywhere, just by using the phone app. There is also an alert if the motion sensor picks up any nearby movement, and then the camera begins to record whatever is happening near the camera. We are going to set it up facing the driveway, and we should be able to watch the car and the driveway in the evenings, and if someone does try to get in the vehicle, we will have them on camera and can report it to the police. For no more than this costs, it seems like a smart idea for anyone who lives in an area where someone might come in your yard or try to get in your vehicle.

We had a CCTV system installed 2 weeks ago. Although there have been no attempts of burglary in our home, the CCTV makes us feel safe. The cost of the CCTV system is $500 and that is cheap to our standards. There are 3 cameras - 1 interior and 2 exterior. The cameras are all trained to the entry and exit points. What's good in this CCTV system is that we can see what's happening when we are away because the cameras are accessible via the internet. It's really great to have CCTV at home, it gives us peace of mind.

My father employs one at his house. Personally, I think they are a big investment and are only necessary in a big place (His house has two floors). When it comes to a small property I don't see them being all that cost effective. Personally, I'd invest in some weapons(And the training to use them too of course) to keep at hand should the situation arise.

If you'll excuse the pun, I think you're "jumping the gun" with that conclusion. While in some cases yes, a firearm might be a good idea for someone to have, I think we're leaning a little too extreme in this case. A security system would benefit a small residence, too, and they're also not that bad of an investment. OP bought a nice camera for $30 on Amazon that's done the trick for them. From my time working at Best Buy, I can tell you they carry full security systems for a reasonable price as well.

Recently the local news in my city has been covering a string of thefts where people will drive around neighborhoods looking for packages left on people's porches. They run up to the porch and steal the package, and the reason we have footage to confirm this that the homeowners had a camera pointed at their front door. This has come a long in way helping my community identify the thieves and the car they drive, which is very significant. I think this is why a small security system should be considered regardless of the size of your residence.

Lol. I hope you are joking. :D In our country, you would see CCTVs all over a small grocery store or a small fastfood chain. Those aren't even two floors or something. Those are just regular wood + cement establishments but they do have CCTVs for security purposes. No matter how big or small your house or establishment is, if you want protection and security, you would really do something about it and having a CCTV is not a bad idea.

I'm not sure about whether you can track a person's identity by just one's security camera system alone, unless there are also nearby CCTV placements on main roads wherein these burglars can be tracked of their whereabouts. Despite it not 100% reliable in terms of identifying the burglar's face, it is indeed really useful as a deterrent for those who intend to break in into one's property. Other than that, it provides the feeling of security to everyone who lives in one's home. Overall, it is better to be safe than to be sorry. Decisions like these matter especially if you have loved ones living too in your home! Stay safe always.

I think they are totally worth it. I had someone try to break into my house a few weeks ago and I wish I had the camera to catch who it was. I plan on getting a few cameras to watch my property. They may not be able to prevent a crime, but they can sure help solve it.

A totally worth, you will see yourself more secure by it and really relaxed, you can actually check what's going on around your house and if something happens (let's hope not) You can see what actually happened. It's worthwhile.

How much of a good investment this is solely depends on how secure your area is. This particular case of robbery could have been prevented by simply locking the doors of the car, but if your area has a high risk of robberies and other crimes, then investment in a security system would be a good idea.

We've invested in a security equipment for our house, and I cannot say it was a bad choice; I guess security is always a good investment because you are working to prevent future issues.

I do not think a $30 camera will be enough evidence to clearly see who the thieves are however, it is a start. By installing a camera, it will hopefully scare off intruders. With the motion sensors, if you have cars passing by it will alert you overtime could be annoying. Maybe install motion lights also. We have a more expensive camera with night vision and that already is not quite HD. Any safety is better than no safety so buying a camera is a great choice!

It is absolutely worthwhile to invest in a security system! Maybe it's the way I was brought up, because my dad installed a security system in our house when I was in middle school, so I spend a lot of my time at home aware that we had a monitoring system. We lived in the country where there weren't a lot of street lights, and people would come out and mess with our barn on occasion, which is why my dad invested in the system. Nothing terrible ever happened, we lost some small things like tools or gas cans, but that doesn't deter from the fact that you don't want someone going through your personal stuff at night.

We never caught anyone, but it felt better knowing that we had a camera system to keep an eye out while we were sleeping or away from home. I live in a rental now, and while I haven't had any problems with theft, I wouldn't mind having a system of my own just in case. There's been a good number of people in my city who have had packages stolen off their porch while they were away, which makes me nervous too.

We live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of low-income people, and many of them walking up and down the street at all hours of the day and night. There is a very good chance that the Person (or persons) who broke into our car are living close by; so if we can see them on camera, we can probably identify them. We actually do not need a whole security system; so spending hundreds of dollars for one of those is not necessary in our case, although in some neighborhoods, it would be worth it. What we have here is people who are mainly looking to steal the change out of the compartment where people usually put spare change, and they apparently saw the mirrors and thought the either wanted them, or (more likely) could sell them easily for some extra money. While just one camera might not help to see where a thief went to, it will definitely help if it turns out to be someone we recognize, and plus we will have a picture to show the police. I like that the app has an alarm if the motion sensor picks up any activity, and this will alert us if it happens when we are asleep at night, and give us a much better chance of catching the thief when he makes his next raid on the vehicle.

Safety and security is second to the most needed thing for humans, according to Psychologist Abraham Maslow. I see that this information is very factual because, even animals has this need as well. To give a high regard of one's safety is instinctive. It is undeniable, our safety is our main priority. For me, safety is never expensive. As long as your sure that you and your love one is safe and worry free. The bill is worth paying. Security cams are one of the few things that can assure your safety. It can serve as your early warning device for impeding danger and will serve as a witness as well.

Security cameras and security systems are great investments. You should also consider a car security system alarm with automatic engine shutoff just in case thieves try to steal your car. The price point for these devices have been reduced significantly over the years as the market is now saturated with different types and models. You should also consider a car cam which is an added security feature. And what about man's best friend, a good faithful dog or pet that will help to scare away the would be burglars? There's quite a few options out there, the security systems are scalable as well meaning that you can upgrade the system gradually without having to purchase everything all at once.

Yes! I think the security cameras are excellent resources to settle in homes and businesses. This technology has become cheaper now, so it has become easier to buy and install a camera system.

I am really sorry to hear this, my friend, but last night we had been robbed too (in a way). My son went to a shop with its bicycle and left it out for a few seconds and when he came out the bicycle wasn't there, someone stole it. He came home crying, my poor boy he was so scared. I calmed him down and told him that he has no fault. The shop didn't have a surveillance camera. I believe that we all should invest and buy such a surveillance system and maybe the thieves will stop from stealing!

I am sorry that this happened to your car and valuables in it.
Here in the Philippines, it is common that cars are forcibly opened and valuable inside like laptops etc. were stolen. Hence, in most communities, the heads have some security cameras installed in strategic places, where a lot of bad things such as snatching, killing and the like have been caught on security cameras and the culprits were caught because of it. Since having them at houses is a bit expensive, only the rich people have them in their big houses. That way, robbers are caught on these security cameras and even the maids doing maltreatment to their children were caught through it. Businesses are now also required to have security cameras in their business establishments.

That sounds really horrible. I guess I am pretty lucky because I live in a very safe neighborhood. Nobody here really breaks into cars or houses. My car has never been broken into... Ever.

I can't imagine how scary and frustrating it has to be dealing with such thieves. I definitely think that everybody should invest some money into buying a security camera. Why not? They are so affordable now and they can potentially not only save your property but also your life. You did a smart thing of getting one and I hope that it gives you better protection!

I think there are lot of security issues lately and so for this reason it's reasonable to invest into the security system. I think camera can be used for the recording of the activity around house. Not sure if this can be helpful for all the people. Some apartments are making it compulsory these days to have the security camera. I am not sure if that can be a good option in many ways. I guess we just have to look at what's possible.

It depends. If you live in a small quiet town, not really... Sure it might happen anywhere, but it's not extremely likely and the cost of the security system would surpass the cost of the stolen or damaged stuff. But if you live in a big city with a lot of criminality - be it New York, Milan or similar places - then if you want to be safe you might want to have one. Even just a small camera in the main room of your house maybe, if you can't afford too much. It won't save you from being robbed, but it might help in catching the criminals.

Its a mind satisfaction matter. People invest to make security system over the house or over the organization or in the corporation- the security system should need to be strong for mental happiness or for taking a quick decision.

We installed a camera and alarm system some years back. I live in quite a dangerous neighborhood where thieves roam the streets at night. There were many cases of theft reported in this neighborhood and just to be on the safe side we decided to install this system. I can now sleep peacefully. I think you did a good thing by ordering this camera. It is so dangerous nowadays.

If you can afford a security system it's a worthwhile investment. If you can't just stay alert, and be thankful if you are nowhere around when a thief breaks into your home or car so that you weren't in danger too. “Stuff” is replaceable. You're not.

Have a old smartphone or tablet laying around? You can use that as a security system. Just download an app and set it up somewhere and you now have camera that records and can be watched in real time from other devices. Some apps even allow for a sound, alarm, or the flash to go off if it detects motion and will even email/notify you when it happens. With that said I don't think most professional security systems are worth it most of the time you're just paying for the sign they put in your yard.

I think its worth it. It is for safety purposes and having them well help to make you feel secure with your property and safety. This will help you be alert and call the authority when you see someone is entering and a possible threat to your family and property. We will never know when will the criminal minds attack our homes and having this camera or CCTV will be a great help to track them when they do the deeds.

Having a security camera will definitely help. It'd also be helpful if you post a sign outside that says security cameras are installed. It'll scare the burglars away.

But I must ask you... do you live in a safe neighborhood? You keep your car door UNLOCKED? I don't think that's a smart idea. You are lucky that they only stole change and some mirrors and not your car. My family has had two cars stolen and we lock our cars and also lock the stirring wheel. It's not safe to keep the doors unlocked even if there are no valuables inside.

Well, it depends on what sort of living arrangements and car parking conditions you have. For example, if you're in a secure apartment building with above or underground gated parking. You shouldn't be worried about theft or breaking and entering for the most part. Even if no security cameras are installed in the complex. If you have an estate or property, however, it's worth to consider investing in some cameras. Especially if it isn't gated or you park your vehicle on the street. Storefronts are a whole different story as I feel having a security system with cameras are required in order to sleep comfortably at night. Nevertheless, the decision of installing a security system or at least a camera is always a good choice towards monitoring your environment for safety.

My hubby installed a CCTV camera on his own. Most of the small CCTV cameras are WIFI able, you can watch what is happening to your home when you are outside, as long as there is WIFI, you are online. Just connect the CCTV to your desktop, keep in on while you are out. Alternatively, you can record the CCTV video into a hardisk in the DVD player. You don't have to get the CCTV guy to install for you. Cheap and DIY. All is in the manual.

It really worth it, a standard CCTV camera is what I highly recommend and it should be installed at every corner of the house. Prevention is better than cure they say because you wouldn't know what will happen in the future. I can remember the last burglary attempts that occurred at my friend's house when I went for a visit. The robbers who were dangerously armed came in the middle of the night when everybody was asleep. Immediately the CCTV camera alerts us inside of their movements and we call the police right away which later apprehended them. What will have happened hadn't it been my friend didn't install the CCTV camera? We may have been robbed of course! Indeed, Security cameras are worth investing on because we don't know what will happen in the future.

CCTV Cameras is a must, especially to all business entities. Having a CCTV camera installed is really beneficial to any company. You get to see and observe what's happening around and might prevent any occurring accidents or happenings that might affect the company and endanger people. CCTV's are also helpful if there some kind of small incidents like thief or anything, because all you gotta need to do is review the CCT cameras.

Cctv is a must nowadays. There are so many crimes happening now and cctv is a big help. Investing one in your home, in your car and in your business is not a waste of money because security should be our first priority. You can notice that most of the crimes now are being solve because of the cameras in the vicinity of the crime. So it's the best example of why we should not think of the money in investing for cctv.

When you have enough money to buy CCTV for your security purpose, why not invest? It depends on your area, when you are near to police station, or nearby building having many security guards, it would safe that CCTV might not consider. The fact why must be near in police station, because most criminals would afraid to do such crime in nearby police stations. It depends of what type of property you have to be secure. Maybe, as of now you should buy CCTV in hiding place, so it will not be noticed by someone and only you.

I think it is a good idea to be as secure as possible. However, I think that a good alarm system in the home will suffice. An alarm system which monitors doors and windows can protect your family. I would most likely only install cameras and security recording devices at my place of business or somewhere that is not occupied or monitored regularly by human personnel. In this case, you would need to be able to see what was going on when you were not there. However, I do not see a need for cameras in and about our little home.

Definitely! Most crimes can be prevented and solved with these very useful tools supposedly putted on the right area at the right time. Much better if you had a security system that automatically alerts a nearby police station or outpost for them to respond as quick as possible to the incident that might be happening.

There are lots of security cams around our workplace and it really helps a lot of people feel secured not only for his/her self but to all of their personal belongings as most of us here stays-in on the compound.

It seems that putting cameras everywhere is the only solution right now, but it's not the ideal one, the system still expensive and affordable only for a few, the safety of individuals depends on how rich they are, which is unfair, just like possessing guns.

100%. It's not safe anymore so it's better to have a security system or camera in your home so you can monitor if there's someone who wants to rob you or anything. You can also use this as a concrete evidence just in case someone robs you and deny it.

If it is really the safety of your home that is your concern then a security camera is one thing that can give you peace of mind. The advice of a ranking police officer is to place the cctv camera in a conspicuous place so that the public can clearly see. When the potential criminal sees that your home has a camera then the planned crime may not be pursued anymore. Truly criminals are turned off by the cctv camera.
