Ready Player One

Ready Player One
There is something fascinating about virtual reality in fiction movies (and more specifically, science-fiction movies) - you can do basically whatever you want, adding all sort of rules and adventures. So imagine a world, a future world, completely in chaos but balanced by the OASIS, a virtual reality universe created by a extremely rich person... who eventually dies. Who will get his legacy? Well, whoever will be able to find the treasure, the easter egg hidden inside all of the OASIS: everyone in the world will partecipate. If this sound interesting to you, then you might want to give a chance to Ready Player One, a upcoming sci-fi movie with basically this plot.

This movie is not a original story, since it's based on a novel, published in 2010 and with same title, written by Ernest Cline. The name might not sound familiar to you, but the movie is directed by one of the greatest director of all time, Steven Spielberg.

Just a quick look at the trailer will make you realize how this is the ultimate nerd dream, with a lot of cameos, of references and all sort of stuff related to the 80 culture (or 90, also) and in general the whole geek world. The book itself is pretty good and funny, and a good read before the movie will come out in a few weeks.

Speaking about the movie, the two main character will be played by Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke. The first one is pretty famous thanks to The Tree of Life, Joe, and a few other movies, while Cooke partecipated in the movie Oujia and its sequel, and in Me & Earl & The Dying Girl. They are young and new actor, ready to be launched in the Hollywood universe... which is not a virtual reality.

Let's just hope the movie will be as good as the movie.

  • Perfect movie for any nerd
  • Directed by Steven Spielberg
  • The book is pretty good

  • Book adaptations are almost always troubled
  • There might be too much stuff going on
  • Is it way too nerd and geek?

Seems great

I am so excited to see Ready Player One in the near future. I have read some reviews and the critics are liking it!

I am just not that interesed in Pacific Rim. I prefer the storyline that Ready Player One offers us. The fact that Spielberg is the director is just a cherry on top.

not hyped for either but

I honestly am not hyped for either but considering that I didn't really find the first Pacific Rim all that enjoyable and the fact that this one has been getting good reviews and it's directed by Steven Spielberg it makes it easy for me to just pick this one. I think even if I'm not too excited to watch it I would still probably enjoy it once I get seated and begin the story whereas with Pacific Rim 2 I feel like I would just be as bored as I was with the first one.

Ready Player One

I'm going to pick Ready Player One over Pacific Rim 2 because it is directed by no less than Steven Spielberg who is one of my favorite directors. I want to see Spielberg's take on virtual reality.

The storyline and plot of Ready Player One is actually not original as anime lovers would point out its similar to SAO or Sword Art Online which started as a Japanese light novel, anime and later on was made into a movie, it was first published in 2009 and it's also about a virtual world where people go to escape the harsh realities of life.

I think Ready Player One will shine knowing Steven Spielberg's genius and his mastery of the sci-fi genre.

Because games...

I watched the trailer for this film and it really suits me as a nerd. I am a gamer and I played a game that has a game character featured in this movie. The concept of the movie is also familiar to me and that got me more interested to watch it.

Steven Spielberg is a genius

I have not read Ernest Cline's novel yet, but at the risk of banking on Spielberg's genius, I think it would not matter much. This film is an homage to any person that grew up in the eighties and nineties. The screenwriters did a superb job of incorporating both decades into one film, complete with those painstaking pop culture references. But sometimes we miss these things, and it worked for me. Contrasting with Pacific Rim: Uprising (I actually loved the first movie more, but only because Charlie Hunnam was there and not included in Uprising), it's a more enjoyable film to watch over and over for me. Believe me, I watched both films at least three times. But I find that Ready Player One is the more entertaining one. Maybe it's because of my age, I am a nineties kid and love those nuggets in the film that are so nostalgic and just knocks softly at the doors of my childhood.

Much more interesting

I love virtual reality based stories, and Steven Spielberg is a classic director. It was a thoroughly enjoyable film, one which I've actually watched multiple times since it came out. Pacific Rim seems like something you don't need to have much thought to watch.

Great movie

The movie was a really fun and enjoyable movie. Seeing A LOT of easter eggs and cameos was so fun to spot and see. While I was watching this the second time I really focused on how many popular characters, games and famous scenes from other movies I could spot. The movie was overall good. If this was to have a second part that would be even better.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Pacific Rim: Uprising
Sometime we watch movies because we want to uncovers a deep complex plot. Other time we want to feel something for characters, to feel their love, or to hate them, or who know what else. Other time we just want to turn our brains off and watch giant monsters punching giant robots! There are a lot of movies just based on special effects, but in 2013 a movie came out that put this concept to eleven, Pacific Rim: the plot was pretty basic, but the budget was high, and the whole attractive of the film was just watching this colossal robots fighting with various monsters, of different shapes, sizes, in various environments. Few people expected it, but the movie was actually pretty well received (probably also thanks to the name of Guillermo del Toro behind it), and now, a few years later, a sequel is ready to came out!

Pacific Rim: Uprising won't have the name of Del Toro in it, sadly, the director is Steven S. DeKnight, that doesn't have much experience in movies but with TV series have a pretty good catalogue, having worked at stuff like Buffy, Smallville, Angel, Spartacus and even Daredevil.

The plot of the movie is... well, how can it be explained? Giant robots punching giant monsters. Surely there will be more, like a excuse for that, but no one will care! Part of the cast will be composed by actors like John Boyega, Scott Eastwood or Jing Tian. Sure, they won't have much actual screentime since most of the movie will be just CGI and special effects... and some people might not like that. But like I said, sometime you just need to turn your brain off, and just enjoy whatever is in front of you, even if on the screen you are watching there is a massive lizard and a giant robot fighting each other. Isn't that freaking cool?!

  • Giant robots AND giant monsters!
  • The perfect movie to turn your brain off for two hours
  • It looks cool

  • Del Toro is not involved
  • Most people might feel like it will be just a special effect showcase
  • Might lack a proper actual plot

Pacific Rim

I haven't seen either yet but I would much rather watch Pacific Rim: Uprising because of the fact that I saw the first film and loved it quite a lot. So I'm presuming that the second one is as good as the first one and hopefully I will enjoy it when I eventually go and watch it in the cinema.

I love huge robots

I watched the first Pacific Rim and I in da enjoyed it. It was like watching transformers go against Godzilla. It was very exciting to watch. The CGI was awesome. Now, seeing that it has a sequel, I kinda want to watch it with my girl. Though I don't like the changes that happened (it now looks more like Power Rangers than Pacific Rim), I'm still gonna watch it. The other movie (Ready Player One) just doesn't appeal to me that much. It looks more like a kid's movie which I could not relate to.

The concept of the pacific rim is awesome. i loved the first part. And I loved the second one as well. I think concept such as this is really good in many ways. And people should definitely think of the movie such as this to be made in sequels.

I Am A Bigger Fan of This

I am sad that Del Toro will not be involved in this film--actually, I was looking forward to seeing it until I just saw this forum post today! In any case, I am still more intrigued by the concept of this film than I am that of Ready Player One. The idea of these ancient and colossal creatures rising up from the ocean to destroy the surface is awesome, and I also think that the idea of humans developing insanely advanced technology to fight them is super-cool as well. It reminds me of the old Godzilla films I once watcher as a child, but on steroids, lol.

Even though this sequel doesn't look even close to good as the first movie, I still prefer it to the other one. I still have some hopes for this movie, because the first one was so good, but a lot of things have been changed and the producer too, which is quite important.

The Pacific Rim is that type of movie that will keep one thinking quite deep about the world in general and how we can get to see the world from another perspective. I always enjoy those movies where robots are used for that is a good way that I can get to really understand some nice theories about how the world is evolving and the changes we can see in the future.

I wasn't totally enamored by the first film but it was decent. I will probably see the sequel in theaters. As for READY PLAYER ONE, it looks awful imo. Something I'd catch on HBO one day, certainly not worth paying multiplex price for.

This was just like Transformers. And I love robot films since when I was a child. They both have amazing graphics tho.
Posted by MomoStarr16 on 04-12-2018

I like the movie of Pacific Rim. Although I'm not a fan of it, I could still say that it is really entertaining. The shifting from the first movie of Pacific Rim to this Uprising has a good concept. The effects were really good and fascinating. I was amazed by how a big robot could be controlled by a person through wires comnecting from the robot to the arms and legs of the the controller.

Pacific Rim

I have watch Ready Player One. I have to commend how well crafted RPO is especially the CGI's. However, storywise I prefer the complexity and twist of Pacific Rim. I feel that they is more to offer for this movie. I would also commend how diverse are the characters of this movie in terms of race. They were able to feature people all over the world. They have asian characters, people of color and caucasian.

This movie for me is near perfect. It has a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Sure, it has its problems, but it has excellent studio design, great chemistry between its cast members, a realistic world, and a great dialogue since Independence Day.

It was literally uprising when it hit the theaters, the story was so good I almost wished it was real or I was a part of it. The graphics are so beautiful and cool at the same time it left me in awe, the emotions the movie game was crazy. Like riding a roller coaster, I myself can't believe that an action movie made me cry like a baby.

I think player one is a good concept. Not going to deny that. But you have to agree that the pacific rim seems to be more good for the story. And also for the overall plot. And I think for fan following it'd be better to try pacific rim type of movies.
Posted by overcast on 03-09-2018
YES, definitely agreed with you. Pacific Rim seems to be more interesting to watch. Not just a show off graphical movies. The story really was amazing too.

I love watching science fiction movies and I would love to watch both movies. Unfortunately, very often movies which are adapted from books are not really fun to watch especially if you have already read the books as many of those movies are different from the original plot. So, I will wait for the reviews before watching Ready Player one. I have watched the Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer and this seems to be a good movie. As it is action and science fiction movies are my favorite. Looking forward to the 23rd March to watch this amazing movie.

I had seen the special effects of Steven Spielberg in Universal Studios in Singapore. The scene was a live one where New York city as hit by a calamity. The tsunami inundated the city which caused a blackout and fire broke every where. I am not much for action movies but that special effects showed how difficult it is to make a movie with the Spielberg touch. And I think Ready Player One is a good one.
Posted by Corzhens on 03-09-2018
I don't know anything about any of these movies. Since I love a virtual reality in the fiction and movies, I am sure I will also like these movies. based on what I have read here, I think Ready Player One will be a better movie because it has thr name of Steven Spielberg.
Posted by vinaya on 03-10-2018
Well, hard to vote which is the best. But the one that Spielberg directed is more pleasing to my eye. I am a Spielberg fan so maybe I am just so bias. :) They both have amazing effects and both looks cool. One is just greater because of who directed it.
Posted by MomoStarr16 on 03-11-2018
Well i haven't seen them both and i think they are both awesome. I love watching movies that are digitally rendered action sci-fi and also movies that are made by famous personality. They are both within my requirements and i'm sure i will love them.

It is no secret to anyone that Guillermo del Toro has a special fondness for monsters - The Water Form, this year's Oscar winner, to say so. Faced with such a history, it was no surprise when the Mexican director decided in 2013 to have fun with a story that referred to the films and series that he loved in his childhood, involving giant monsters and warrior robots in fights. Cinema-popcorn assumed, Círculo de Fuego amused without offending the spectator's intelligence, although it brings a series of stereotyped characters and inflamed speeches to Independence Day. In spite of this, there was an internal logic that minimally sustained such confrontations.

Steven Spielberg's new feature, inspired by the book by the same name by Ernest Cline, is not new, in spite of the technological layer in which it is enveloped and the endless list of references to the pop culture world of the 1970s and 1980s - pay attention to the beautiful homage to Stanley Kubrick's "The Enlightened One."

The dizzying pace, packed by a trail from Van Halen to Cindy Lauper, helps to get into the mood. But in the end, that feeling of déjà-vu remains.

I've had fascination with Robots since I was a kid. I'm a person who's childhood was based on the 80's, so for sure Mazinger, Dai Apolon, R2D2, C3PO, were part of my existence. So, obviously when I watched the first Pacific Rim, I felt like a child again, enjoying the battles, the plot, the music, the characters. Haven't seen the second one yet, but for sure I'm more than excited for it, I really need to go this weekend and check it out on the big screen.
Posted by ballyhara on 04-18-2018
I prefer Pacific Rim because when it first came out it really rocks! I remember the anime series I used to watch when I was a kid and it's title is Evangelion. It looks the same because of the giant robots that is piloted and controlled by a human being to fight against monster aliens attacking earth. I really like to see more and hope that Pacific Rim would have a third enterprise since it made a second movie. This movie series is really cool though.

Pacific Rim Uprising is for those people who like giant fighting robots. But for those who love the first film because of the emotions and the characters then prepare to be dissapointed? on the 2nd installment. Nevertheless, the movie and cinematic effects are superb!
