Religion makes people good and kind

Religion makes people good and kind
A philosopher said that if God does not exist then we have to create God because we need God. With religion, we also need it so we can have a spiritual guide. The world will be in chaos if there is no religion. Just like in the earlier era when tribes were inventing religion just to have peace and order. Without religion, those tribes were killing each other. Does that mean that religion can stop wars? Maybe not but religion definitely makes people kind and good to each other. So it is important that people have a religion to follow.

I totally support this because I know a lot of people do good because of the fear of God.I wonder how the world would be without Religion which instill fear into people.

If Religion is the opium of the masses and some people behave like devil incarnate,I wonder how it would have been without Religion.

Sure,I strongly believe that religion was created to help bring order and peace to the world. At least good over evil.

Yeah, it's true and I wonder as well if there is absence of religion, things would have gone worse and we can do nothing about it or anything to remedy the situation.

It doesn't work for everyone. I know of a lot of people who religiously go to mass every Sunday but still do very bad deeds. The politicians in my country all have religions. They are spotted attending mass regularly, yet they also regularly engage in corruption.

Also, what about the thing that you call Holy war? There are some people who are willing to kill for their religion. There are those who would kill people who are not affiliated with their own religion.

Here are my points : -religion can be of help to transform a person into doing good. However, a lot of people are doing bad things despite their religion.

-religion is open for interpretation. Some people could misinterpret what is written in their religion, thus becoming extremists. They result to killing which is of course the opposite of good and kind. This, religion could also be one source of sin.

First of all just think for a second about that stupid philosopher who thought that God doesn't exist. Then think can you even breath once without the existence of Almighty. No you cant. How the hell a whole universe works on itself while some people think that a a big bang was enough and others think its nature. Religion is the need of the hour in oder for societies to stay human. Religion separates noble from evil. Day of judgment would end the world and only those would win who were true to the most true religion.

Indeed religion is the opium of the people and it can be beneficial or detrimental in this sense. There's a sort of control element to religious concepts which many would adhere to. This brings some form of order but it also brings control to those who may not deserve to be in control. Religion has influenced peace but religion has also influenced war among those who have different religious beliefs. One has to keep an open mind when contemplating on a belief structure that has a level of perceived supremacy that is somehow related through mankind as the potential for manipulation and establishing power is very high for some who cannot control themselves. For some people it brings peace, comfort and some means of security knowing that there is a higher power looking upon them to take care of their life. Others question the motives of the advocates as time after time there are stories and outrageous acts that occur in the name of religion.

We need God for our spiritual growth and his words for our guidance to be a good mankind .But not all people follow the preaching of priest they hear mass every Sunday hear the homily in Christian church but after that some people still doing bad things and make other people miserable. Yes we need religion to serve us guide in our spiritual growth and awareness but it doesn’t mean if we have religion we will become good or kind it is depend on a person and his belief, attitude and behavior and fear in God.

Personally, I don't think religion has anything to do with making one to be good or bad. It all depends on the persons view of life and how he or she reasons. I have seen the so called strong religious people being with the worst character and even more sinister than those who doesn't have any inclination to any religion at all.

Recently, I got an atheist as a friend and believe me, he made me had a change and different view on the importance of religion in the world today. He is by far the most upright, good and kind hearted person that I have ever seen. So therefore, to me religion is not a big deal all now.

A double-edged sword...

It is without a doubt true that religion sets a certain tone in most people's lives and gives them rules to follow. This is especially true in the East and I guess you could even say in the US with Christianity. As long as it is not taken to the extreme, of course, as some religions such as Christianity have certain rules that are simply self-contradictory and promote violence, such as hatred towards homosexuals and people of other races (see KKK)

But there are other religions, that, when wrongly interpreted, are used against others. For example ISIS and Book Haram, where they claim to be Muslim and end up doing ridiculous things like bombings and all that other terrorist nonsense that nobody in this world needs. However, I do think you can be a good, law-abiding and kind person without religion. I know many people who are and I myself am not religious but I still try my best to show respect and kindness towards everyone.

Take the best parts of religion with you in your life, leave out all that stupid extremest nonsense. Then you got yourself a good thing going.

I used to be liberal. But the way liberal people have damaged the world. I can say that liberal world is not something I'd say good enough for the people around the world. Most likely we are going to have their own self in many ways. I guess there are some really issues with the religion these days. And people have to learn to be kind and good in many ways for the learning curve. It is indeed a good to be conservative in life.

It is nice to follow a religion. And each religion has their own beliefs and rules. Some people really change and become good person when they join a religion that shows them how to be a better person. But being a good person is not about your religion or if you have a religion that you follow. I know some peoplw that they are not really active in their religion but they are really a great person. And I know some people that active in their religion but still they are rude and has a bad attitude towards others.

I'm not a believer person and I thought that religions were a waste of time and, also, they were bad for the world because a lot of wars started because of religious differences but now, I realized that people need something to believe, they need to believe that there is someone bigger and omnipotent that get angry when people do bad things to others and there is a place where, when a bad person dies, his/her soul is sent to that place to remain forever suffering as a punishment. Also, peolpe need a reason why bad things happen to them and the reason is that God always has a plan for their life and, if somemthing didn't work for you it's because it wasn't for you and there is another thing out there waiting for you because you are the only person in the world that can do it better than the others. It's like "When a door closes, a window opens".

I don't know if I should sustain this or not. It is true that religion may people good and kind but this is not available for all the people. I have seen people who killed the other people as a sacrifice or let's take for example the terrorists that kill people in the name of their religion, I cannot consider these people good and kind. In some cases, religion transforms people in criminals and the enemy number one in some issues.

Religion had existed even before the world commenced. Religion teaches people certain ways of life which they must follow. That's the reason religious people seem to be good and kind to one another. They learn a lot of principles from their religion which they are bound to apply into practical lives. They realize that they must sheepishly follow the ethics of their religion in order not to face the consequences of disobedience. Religious people don't just live anyhow but have guiding principles for living daily lives.

Every religion has critics. These are categories of people who antagonize the religionists for their ways of life. The two major types of religion we have all over the world are Christian and Muslim religion. Although there are countless types of religion, Christians and Muslims are most popularly known. These classes of people are deeply taught from the mysteries of their respective religion and shown the right ways to relate to others.
Posted by potentialwriter on 10-01-2017
I disagree with you. Just because you are a religious person it doesn't make you good and kind. There are many people that call themselves Christians or something else and have committed terrible crimes. Sure, some people do good deeds but not all and it is definitely not connected with the religion or your general beliefs. It's more important how good people are by nature, how they're brought up and how they see morality.
Posted by Mehano on 10-01-2017
I think that the above poster got it right. Religion can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. More wars and destruction have been fought in the name of religion than anything else. I think if there was not organized religion, the world might be a better place, but then again, I don't know. People seem to need it, because many people can not live with ambiguity in their lives and need a deity to tell them what to do.
Posted by kgord on 10-01-2017
I disagree. I know a lot of religious people, especially in my country where religion is strong because the pope is here, and they can be worse than people who are not religious. Most of the times they'll do very bad deeds without caring because they have God to forgive them. I'm an atheist and I've found a bigger moral compass in people like me than in religious people. It is easy to do bad things and think that God will forgive you so it doesn't matter.
Posted by Tania997 on 10-01-2017
It doesn't. Hitler was a professed Christian and slaughtered 6 million people. There was a Buddhist sect that was incredibly violent and murdered a bunch of people. Extremist versions of Christianity and Islam have fanatics committing crime everyday. Salvation Army that professes Christian values have turned away homeless teens to die out in winter storms because they didn't want to convert on the spot or because of their gender identity. I've seen that personally with my own two eyes as an aide worker for the homeless. Religion doesn't make people good. That's totally entirely up to the individual to make the choice of what's right and what's wrong. I'm sick of people professing to be religious and think that makes them good people because it doesn't. It doesn't. Your actions don't match up to your so called beliefs and words. Walk the damned walk. Plus most religions steeply contradict itself. Old Testament killing people is okay, rape is okay, stoning people for making mistakes is okay, New Testament- love thy neighbor. Which is it? Can't have it both ways. I do it everyday without professing any sort of belief in a higher being. I'm in the trenches all the time helping the homeless and disaffected youth. What are these so called religious people doing? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I've seen more kindness from the hated 'Liberal Leftist Atheists' who volunteer and actually donate a fair amount. One of the most compassionate, caring and successful teen homeless organizations is secular and I'm proud so say that I've done a lot of work for them and it was joyful to see a lot of teens get a solid hold on their life. I've even seen so called Christians beat an innocent gay person to death in the streets. Let that sink in. So no religion doesn't dictate whether a person will do good or not. More often than not it's used as a tool for a specific agenda that usually veers towards hate than compassion.
Posted by Rhodolite on 10-01-2017
I both agree and disagree. In theory, yes depending on the religion it should, in theory, make them nicer than they would if they weren't of a religion. Though religion plays a part in the type of person someone is, it doesn't determine how "nice" they are. I believe that religion can help a person to turn away from things that otherwise would have made them not as "nice" as they would have been but religion isn't a deterrent for being a bad or mean person it just persuades to be a better person in that particular religion's ideal view.
Posted by AlexHarris on 10-01-2017
For my opinion it depends because some people have religion but still don't have Jesus Christ in there life they are still living in a sinful life not a good and kind life but a cruel life it's like making a religion as an option so i cannot say that religion can make the people good and kind only in God alone can make people good if you can just understand and read the bible follow God's word you can be come a genuine good and kind person so i strongly suggest don't depend to much on religion it will only fail you sooner or later depend on God directly, develop intimacy with him pray always and God will take care the rest.
Posted by tophew on 10-01-2017
If you need religion to "make" you good and kind, then something is wrong with you in the first place. If religion did NOT exist, you should STILL be a decent, kind, good, righteous, and compassionate person. Religion is full of great teachings, but look at history; how many people have died because supposed "religious" people fought with one another over their beliefs? It's still going on today. Religion can enhance one's morality with its teachings, but if you are a bad person, you can easily twist religion to your own desires and humanize it which takes away its divinity altogether.
Posted by JoeMilford on 10-01-2017
Not all religious people are good and kind and not all non religious people are bad and mean. There are many different types of people. I attended a church where the people were very judgemental of others. They were far from nice people but they were religious that didn't make them good to others. I know many people who have never been to church and some of those people are the kindest nicest people that I have ever met.
Posted by Sue on 10-01-2017
That's exactly how I feel. I still remember when my grandmother used to go to church every Sunday and the people there were rather horrible. They weren't all about helping the others but rather trying to compete with each other who "did more" then brag about it for weeks.
Posted by Mehano on 12-07-2017
I honestly don't believe 100% in this because I know many people who regularly go to church following their religions and are horrible people when it comes to helping others who need help. Not to mention how poor in spirit they really are.

The church / religion is only an alibi to claim their false goodness.
Posted by wiseagent on 10-01-2017
Not necessarily. There are many people that say that they are believers, that they follow God and then on the back they are doing terrible things, using the religion to cover up their dark side. I believe in God but not in religion. Religion, in my opinion, was created to have control of people using the name of God. I know there are many people that are great human beings and they don't belong to anything or are just not believers. The good has to come from within us and that's it. Do good to others no matter what and DO NOT HATE, if the more people could follow only this, I believe the world would be a better place.
Posted by felabruno on 10-01-2017
I guess not necessarily. Religion can help people become good and kind, but not all people who follow a religion are good and kind. Religion is a means but not an end. Gentleness and kindness are made with education and awareness in treating people the same way you want to be treated. Religion can help to awaken this awareness, but it is up to each person to analyze it internally within himself.
Posted by hermessantos on 10-01-2017
It really depends on the individual. For some people, their religion does make them more introspective, peaceful, good and kind. However, for others, it can make them more combative, self-righteous, critical and judgemental. I don't think religion ensures goodness. It really comes down to individual choices. There are many non-religious people who are still very moral and kind.
Posted by Mahshiemonalisa on 10-01-2017
Every religion teaches the followers to be kind to one another, help and forgive one another, do not commit adultery , crime and many more. Every religion has their own God or deities to reunite the people together to become stronger. No one could judge which religion is the strongest or the best. Once you are born, you follow what you parents taught you to believe in. Of course, you can convert to another religion when you are grown up, that is individual acceptance.
Posted by peachpurple on 10-02-2017
I disagree with this for the most part. Yes, religion has the potential to promote kindness and compassion amongst people. However, given humanity's track record it would seem that people use it more to divide themselves, judge others, and fuel political movements. Religion has consistently been a battle of "our god versus their god" and people have spilled blood in the name of God for centuries. Sure it promotes kindness and compassion, so long as you follow the rules exactly and behave the exact way they demand it. That isn't kindness. That's manipulation.
Posted by Denis_P on 10-02-2017
Not all religions are true. In fact, only one is. The rest of them are lies and certain major ones, in fact, worship demonic beings. OK, why would people want to follow false religion? Well, they don't want real truth cause it restricts their freedom, basically making them do things they don't want to do.
Posted by jyy on 10-02-2017
Without religion there will be total chaos and problems all over in the world. Religion helps us to obey and know that God created us and he wants us to love and care for one another. People hate each other because or kill others because they do not allow the spirit of God to direct their lives even after hearing from their pastors or imams.
Posted by babyright on 10-02-2017
This depends on how people perceive religion. Islamic terrorists are misinterpreting Islam and they killing people in the name of religion. Since the time immemorial religion has been one of the reasons of bloodshed. Even Jesus was killed in the name of religion.
Posted by vinaya on 10-05-2017
I think it's true in some cases but not all. There are a lot of people who turn violent because of their religious beliefs and some may not become violent but because of their religious doctrine they develop a superiority complex wherein they start to think they are better or more able to judge morality than others and they use that to shun people that don't fit in to the mold that their religion dictates, such as people who are gay or have tattoos and listen to rock, etc. I think it may work for some people and that it does make them better people than they otherwise would have just become aimless and mean but that's kind of cherry picking and it can be said for almost any other hobby or belief.
Posted by Wubwub on 10-06-2017
Religion makes you good or it makes you bad, if your religion makes you good and bad, then it's either your religion is not up to mark or you're retarded to some extent. And come to think of it, you can't actually be good and bad, it might be possible with the sequential application of it, but logically looking at it, you will discover that it's really not feasible. So it's either you are good or you are bad, and if you are good your are good and if you are bad , you can be good as well.
Posted by Authord on 10-06-2017
The core work of religion is to bring change to the way we live our lives and that involves making us good people on earth. So, I think that's the reason religion is good for mankind for it changes so much in us to become better people to one another.
Posted by Barida on 10-06-2017
Now way that religion makes all people kind. In fact, horrible things have been done in the name of religion. Who are we kidding here? However, though, the bad applications could be using religion as a cover for something else, like colonialism.
Posted by jyy on 10-07-2017
We shouldn't blame religion since some use it to do evil and cover it in the pretence that nothing is going to happen about that. I think we should understand the teachings of the scripture and work accordingly with it.
Posted by Barida on 12-07-2017
It depends. As with most things in life all extremes can hurt. That the Islamism that has been all over the media nowadays. They use a religious claim to murder, rape and destroy their way around. Not good. People should use discretion with everything and religion is no exception
Posted by Marvadaum on 10-07-2017
Whatever religion that a person joins it still boils down to his own character or upbringing. Taking your own religion wholeheartedly, abiding by what is good or bad really is what makes a person whole. It molds one to become a worthy individual.
Posted by Anonymous on 10-11-2017
Religion is the cause of many wars throughout history and does not make a person good or kind. Those who don't choose or have a religion can be good and kind, and I have seen seemingly religious people being mean, rude and horrid. In fact my parents decided not to go to church because the vicar was so rude to them and they live across the road. He then wonders why there is only a congregation of a dozen people each Sunday. People actually complained about him and he was told to stop being too preachy because people had stopped attending. So, you have a religious person who isn't that nice or kind and that's their job.
Posted by Alexa on 11-02-2017
I also believe religion makes people to be kind. We teach our children to obey God and not to commit sin. They grow up being kind people and doing their best to always be kind. I also believe we should have a religion but not all religions bring people towards God. Some religions are doing the opposite. By now we should all know there are many religions.
Posted by mildredtabitha on 11-13-2017
It really doesn't. Religion is just like a police badge. There are good and bad cops - so there are good and bad Christians. Some choose to use their religion as a bat or a sword. Bludgeoning, impaling, or beating down people who don't agree with or think like them.
Posted by NickJ on 12-12-2017
Religion is supposed to make people good and kind but it doesn't. However I think spirituality does this. Religion is made up of a bunch of people that tend to blindly follow the rules with no questions.Religion produced the likes of Alkaida ,Isis and Boko Haram, some of the most deadly terrorist groups, with crimes committed in the name of God.. Slavery in the USA was excused by using Religion. So i disagree with you. I think what you mean is spirituality, which is believing in a higher power, whose main teaching is love.
Posted by jaymish on 12-17-2017
I think that this traits are included in our human nature. And religion serves as our guide on how to improve ourselves more and know about out history and our God but I think that religion per se does not make people good and kind. I know some who are known to be religious individuals but still commit hideous crimes.
Posted by anahbello1206 on 02-06-2018
Maybe I can agree with you that religion per se does not make people good and kind. However, take note that people grow no matter how old he is such that he can change for the better when he is given the proper guidance. If you have not heard of the word reform, it means changing yourself for the better. And reformation is one achievement of most religious groups that I know.
Posted by Corzhens on 02-21-2018
Religion per se can't make a person good or bad. It can help shape a person's set of beliefs and actions but church and religious beliefs aren't the only influences in one's life. Many go though the rituals of religions without understanding the meaning of each practices or rituals. A lot of Christians don't even read the bible. Many only listen to the bits and pieces they hear during the mass or service. Some religions even justify killing in the name of faith. Some religions ostracize people because of their gender. Being good and kind are traits that can be learned outside of the religious fold.
Posted by chatbox on 03-06-2018
Yeah right. People invented the religion just to organize the people also, to unite them and avoid the misunderstanding. But the problem right now, there're a lot of religions and they wanted to prove that each of the them are the true and right religion, and because of that they started the war. Not even understand that the religion teach us to become better person and should know how to respect.
Posted by ion on 03-14-2018
I don't think the religion is the one who makes good and kind people, I mean no matter how good your religion sounds if the church leaders are not good, the members (not all) might get their characters since most religious members are taught to follow their leaders. So for me, it is also depends on how the leaders in the church handle the members and how they treat them.
Posted by nrnlss on 10-18-2018
Religion makes people good and kind: For me, being a good person is not because of the religion. Being good or kind can be found inside you own and not from your religion, it was already in yours. If religion can make people good then, why we can't find a religion who was a members full of good and kind people only? Religion can't manipulate all its member, because everyone has its own mind set, beliefs and wants.
Posted by mhingnhormz on 11-17-2018
The reality that a person is part of a religion isn't always the defining measurement of if they are good or bad. Hitler become born with a catholic uprising, that honestly did not make him a great moral individual.
Posted by jetselle on 11-22-2018
The Bible or the Word of God is what makes people change, it's not really religion. Man in nature is a sinner and therefore cannot produce "good". Man is spiritually dead. But when a man gets saved, he is renewed and quickened by the Spirit of God and the Holy Spirit begins to live in his heart. He then becomes spiritually alive again. He is no more condemned to hell but is passed from death unto life. He is now given eternal life in heaven. Good works are just a result of being saved. A person does good things and good works because he is already saved and the Word of God is like a "mirror" that tells him what is right and wrong. So it's not necessarily religion which makes a person good and kind but his relationship with God and the Word of God.

I like what you said that "A philosopher said that if God does not exist then we have to create God because we need God. " My take on it is "If God exists then we don't have the capacity to understand God's existence because we were made witb limited intelligence."
