Thor's Well

Thor's Well
There is a italian expression, "making a hole in the water", with the meaning of failing. If you fail something, italian people use to say "you made a hole in the water". Well, nature made a hole in the water, and she made sure that it was amazing! In Oregon there is a place in Cape Perpetua, in the Siuslaw National Forest, called Thor's Well (but some people call it door to hell, even if there is no fire inside...) which is an amazing hole with some waterfall falling inside it. Thor, as you might know, is the nordic god of thunder (and not only a Marvel character) so it's weird that such a place would be named after him. There is a complex system of caves under it, and when there are waves, a lot of water comes outside of this massive hole. With the high tide it's not even visible, so watch out... you don't want to fall inside, or be sucked in it!

This place is simply amazing, and it's hard to not look at it with a "wow" expression on your face! Be sure to bring your camera, but remember that with all the waves it might not be easy to take a picture of it... and getting too close it's really really dangerous! Besides, you need to be here in the right moment of the year if you don't want to photograph just the sea without nothing interesting in it.

  • Amazing to look at
  • A mysterious feeling with the depth of the hole
  • The waves looks powerful
  • During storms it's gorgeous

  • Not visible with high tide
  • You need to get really close to see it well
  • Really dangerous
  • You need to walk a bit and it's not easy to find
  • Not well marked

never heard of it!

I have never heard of this natural wonder! It looks amazing. I am really drawn to places in nature that include water features. I would be terrified to ever get stuck in this thing - but would love to see it from a distance. I also love the sound of powerful water. I would love to be able to travel and visit this phenomenon.

Just wow! Thor's Well looks so incredible and it has something very peaceful about it. I could just stare at that picture and forget about everything else. I can only imagine what sort of effect it has on you when you see it in the real life.

The Door to Hell is also amazing but I think that due to its fiery color it would hurt my eyes to stare at it. Plus it seems not very easy to reach.

Thors Well

I've always been fascinated with holes that just go down into the unknown. I'd much prefer going to Thor's Well than the Door to hell since it isn't particularly beautiful. The idea of just jumping in Thors Well sounds like the last thing I would do on my bucket list since the fact that we don't actually know what is under the crust of the Earth kind of makes me wonder.

Fire Versus Water? Uuuhh … Water!

The Door to Hell as you describe it, is man-made and stinks. Why would I choose that over a natural wonder such as Thor's Well? Plus it's in Oregon USA. I'm already in America so it's not an impossibility that I could see this place one day. Whereas the Door to Hell is in Turkmenistan. I've never been anywhere that ends with “stan” and I probably never will visit any such place.

I am a nature lover and I will love to visit Thor's well. It looks so amazing. After reading this post I did a good search and found some amazing photos. Listening to the sounds of water always make me feel relaxed and this is the reason I choose this one over Door to Hell. I hope that I will be able to visit this place one day. It looks so amazing.

Thor's Well

Thor's Well seems to be a very interesting subject, it involves the nature and in a way or another that whole was created by God or in some people mind that believe in conspiracy theories they will say that the government created it with who knows what experiments

I have never heard of or seen this place before, and it is beautiful, as far as I can tell from photos. I would not mind seeing the Door To Hell either, but this Thor's Well is quite intriguing. Can you only see it from an aerial or flight view? I sure would not want to trust a boat near the mouth of this thing! In any case, I am a big fan of the Hollow Earth theory, so both of these locations sound pretty awesome to me! I'd go to Thor's Well first, though. Hell can wait, lol.

I had never seen or heard of Thor's Well before thit post, but I confess that after I searched some images / informations I got my jaw dropped... What an absolutely beautiful thing!

It would be a pleasure to visit a place like this someday.

Gates to the nowhere.

Some call it a "gaping sinkhole," the "drainpipe of the Pacific" even a "gate to hell." It's known as a bucket list item for any thrill-seeking photographer, but a place that will swallow you whole if you venture too close. But whatever get a picture if you can via a quadcopter.

Looks great

I'm from Italy and everyone here knows how many times people will say that you made a hole in the water when you have failed at something, but I would have never imagined something like that literally existed! I'll vote for this one because it has turned a common expression into reality.

Like wtf is this, LOL, this is really the best present and food to give to your guests on Halloween, men this is really creepy and scary. I can imagine the uproar that will arise, when my friends come visiting and I serve them this, covered with plates. Only for them to open the plates and see the zombie skull staring right at them LOL, this is very cool though, and funny.

Nature is great!

I'll go for Thor's Well. Is it amazing because of its natural made than door to hell that is man made. I like water and I want to look what is inside of that hole. But as said above, it is really dangerous. I hope people will have a way to look this place a little bit closer.

This is actually the first time that I am getting to read anything about the Thor's well and I must say that I am impressed by the way the water is falling inside the deep holes and how it is also related to falling speaks a lot as well. One thing that I have get to know as well is that there are a whole lot of other things which is pretty okay for this kind of situation as well.

Water falls Nature

I love going to a place where in i can see water falls i love how the waters go down and it has a relaxing atmosphere for me not like the other side door to hell that you will see a burning hole and it is hot and too bright for the eye not my type. but this water falls such a wonderful nature to unwind for a bit with friends or family.

Thor's Well

Obviously this one is probably more pleasant to visit and take pictures of because - it's not on fire and there's no foul odor emitting from it.

Door to Hell

Door to Hell
Where is hell? Books, movies and even videogames put its entrance in the most insane place of our planet or universe, when the answer is under everyone eyes: the Door to Hell is in Turkmenistan! If you wonder what I'm talking about, go in the Karakum desert (north of Ashgabat) and you'll see it: a massive firey pit that it's constatly burning! It looks gorgeous, doesn't it? But it's not nature's work. The place had its origin with an accident in 1971: some people were trying to find oil and they perfored the ground. This released a lot of natural gas, which was burned to avoid more serious problems, injuries or accidents. Since then, the gas is burning, and the fire is hot as... well, hell! A lot of tourist go to see it, and the area nearby is pretty popular for camping! Camping near hell itself, isn't that nice? With 60-70 meters of diameters, and 20 meters of depth, this amazing place is believed to be a supernatural place by the locals (they call it Darvaza, literally "door"). You can see its light from a great distance.

This place is.. nice. It's man-made basically, so it's not that gorgeous as Thor's Well. And trust me when I say that it doesn't smell good at all!

  • You can see the light from far away
  • The flames are cool to look at
  • You can camp nearby, in a very atmospheric scenario
  • Amazing at night

  • Not as good during the day
  • Atrocious smell
  • It's man-made, not nature-made
  • You need to walk for hours and hours
  • The road to reach the crater is terrible
  • No protection near the crater: beware of falling to death!

Door to Hell

I like how some of the natural resources are now burning on their own. And no amount of the rain is going to stop it from burning. So it can be a good option. I think people should harness this energy. And it can be good in many ways for the nearby power distribution. So on that context I'd say this is natures miracle.

This one

I will choose door to hell. I like the fact that in evening it is great view even though it is very dangerous place. The look of flame is really nice and amazing. But we cant go there any furthere because its hot over there. But still I ike it and i will show it to all of my friends.

I am often have the issues with adjusting to both "thor's well" and the "door to hell". And on that point you can see that both of them have their own natural miracles. I don't know how many of us can be able to see this from closest angle. But it seems like a good places to visit them both. I am not sure if I can though. It may require a lot of money to even initiate such type of the visit there as well.

I will love to see the door to hell, I love sighting things like this.though it sounds a bit dangerous. Will love to camp nearby, it will be amazing with that light on as far I'm in safety, there wouldn't be a problem.

Do you really mean you will camp nearby the door to hell? Isn’t it scary to be doing that? I am safety conscious when it comes to nature trip and that is the main reason why until now we still haven’t been to the crater of the smallest volcano here. The Taal Volcano is situated in an island in the middle of the lake. The volcano itself is a tourist spot. Most of those tourists who go to that island take the challenge to climb the volcano up to the crater. But it is dangerous that’s why I don’t approve of it.

Hard to choose between these two. They're amazing in their own way. So, if I could have the chance I will visit both, because nature deserves to be admire closer. I've had the chance to travel around and have seen many great things, but nothing like nature itself.
Posted by ballyhara on 10-01-2017
I don't know about Thor's Well or the Door to Hell. I even don't know the Italian expression "you made a hole in the water. Based on what I have read here and the picture I have seen, I think Thor's Well must be an amazing place.
Posted by vinaya on 10-05-2017
With Thors well you will be able to experience the best of nature and relax with piece of mind than going near door to hell.
Posted by babyright on 10-06-2017
I never heard of either of these, but looking at the photos of them they both look amazing and I think I would be interested in both of them. I think they are both great places to visit and to look at as well. I wouldn't mind seeing them one bit!
Posted by kgord on 10-06-2017
This is the first time that I’ve heard of that Door to Hell and I am so curious that you can even camp nearby. Naturally it is amazing at night because the light will shine brightly and can be seen far away. Turkmenistan is an alien place to me because I only see that name in the newspaper when there are sports events and that country had sent a delegation. But now maybe that country will become popular with that door to hell spectacle. It’s truly a tourist spot that will make their country popular.
