Turn based

Turn based
Time to fight! Your opponent is ready to attack, and you are powerless! Why? But because you are playing a turn based game of course! There are many of those: many RPGs, expecially JRPG, are turn based, and turn based strategy is its own genre as well. They can be simple and basic like Final Fantasy or Pokemon, or be more creative like with Undertale or Child of Light. Turn based strategy offer games like Civilization or Crusader Kings, along with many others. It's a kind of gameplay often pretty slow that requires a lot of thinking and a lot of planning. A special case, however, is the Total War series which is a blend of the two: the map part of the game, where you move your armies, build them and manage your empire, is all turn based. This is the most known example, but there are also many other games that can't fit in one single category.

Pros
  • Lots of thinking and planning required, and some people like this
  • A lot of strategy can be involved on how you play out your turns
  • Some of the turn based games out there are pretty originals with this concept

Cons
  • It can be slow and boring
  • Not all people like the thinking and planning part
  • Attack each other turn after turn can be a really really basic gameplay, maybe even too basic

True skill needed

More thinking and strategy must be put into a turn based game as it is a more balanced playing field. Real time game odds can be put in someones favor just by having a faster reason time/ more actions in the same amount of time.

It gives a D&D vibe

I prefer turn based strategy games because it gives off a real strategy game vibe like Dungeons and Dragons. Also you need to think a lot, quick reflex or other practical skill will help, only pure strategy.

Critical thinking exercise

Both are okay but I love this one more because it enhances my thinking faculty level. It will force you to undergo a critical thinking exercise which is very healthy for the brain. Many adults will go for this. Real time at the other hand only requires an immediate decision.

I tend to disagree about critical thinking because whenever I hear the world critical it means instant or directly which I believe enhances your way of thinking instead of having time to decide what would you do, it's not critical at all. At least that is my opinion. Cheers! :)

Galegating, it's interesting that you bring that up. I do believe that it's important to distinguish between these two types of thinking when debating RTS and turn based strategy. If anything, I think RTS depends more on thinking on the fly and reacting to events that are already happening. However, I do believe turn-based games allow for more careful planning, which allow you to plan towards larger events in the future. I believe that preference between these two types of games may actually have a relationship with your preference of instant or delayed gratification. At least for me, both types of games are fantastic.

Real time

Real time
Real Time is the way to go in most strategy games, like Empire Earth or Age of Empires among the most famous, but also in some RPGs, expecially Action RPGs like Dark Souls or the Ys series. You don't wait turn to fight anyone, instead the action is all done in one go! RTS however are not the only game with real strategy (besides of game where a turn based system won't make sense like FPS or platformers), since many building game are a special kind of strategy game that it's real time. You don't fight anyone, you just try to build something good (zoo, theme park, hospital) and make a profit of it. All in real time. I will mention even ere the Total War series, however, since it applies to both categories: the battles are in real time, and are absolutely epic expecially with big armies.

Pros
  • It's faster, and more immediate
  • It's more realistic since in real life people don't wait turns to fight
  • In some game you can even accelerate time if you are waiting for something to happen

Cons
  • You don't have much time to react if something bad happen
  • If you're having too many fights, you might get tired after a while

Though battle

I love both real time and turn based strategy games. I came to love turn based strategy games because of Final Fantasy Tactics. I got hooked to real time strategy games because of Red Alert. Both games are awesome. Both games are challenging. But if I only can choose one, I'd have to pick.....

Real time strategy games!

I find real time strategy games to be more exciting. Turn based strategy has the tendency to be slow and boring. Real time is a lot more fun. Also, there are now only a few good turn based strategy games. Real time is the best.

Stronghold Crusader is My Game!

I've always been more of a fan of RTS games. Turn based games are fine, and I like playing Civ 5 or Heroes of Might and Magic when I play with my friends, but any other time I like to be able to build my settlements and battle everything out in real time.

Age of Empires was the game that got my in to RTS games, and ever since then they've been a staple in my video game diet, I guess you could say. In middle school I discovered Stronghold Crusader, and I can't tell you how many hours I put into that game. There's something about building my kingdom and armies from scratch at the same time my enemies are that is a lot of fun.

Action!

Ah, this is a tough choice for me because I love both types. Both have their pros and cons but ultimately I think that RTS is a bit better.

Why? Well since they are in real time there is no delay in the gameplay. There isn't any waiting which can be a bit annoying if you play with multiple players... If they are slow the turns can take forever. Real time strategies are so much more exciting and every second of the game can decide the winner. That is why you must think and adapt really quick.

My favorite real time strategy is still the good old Age of Empires 3. I have spent many hours playing it with my friends and it always brings me back amazing memories.

I also like that RTS games let everyone build or play at their own rate and at the same time. I love Civ 5, don't get me wrong, but it gets annoying after a while waiting for people to complete their turns, especially if they're taking forever turn after turn. In general, I enjoy a face-paced game.

Real time

Oh my fucking god. I hate turn-based games with all of my being. Having to sit there and watch what attack your enemy does while taking the attack and being powerless to avoid or dodge it is the definition of cancer. Real-time games are with out a doubt better because you can show your skill in a real-time game just as much as you can in a turn-based game. In a real-time game, you can win through multiple things like reflexes, quick thinking,

Real Time

I usually play real time games. They seem to be more fun. Turn based games are too slow for me and I don't like waiting.

Real Time

I like to see how stuff works around. And for this reason I think real time game based is really good. I am not sure if the real time based games are good on many ways. That being said, there are some mixed hybrid game play which can be good enough. Real time games are worth playing for both real time and turn based as well. That's something we have to pay attention to on many ways.

Fast!

Turn-based games are much more like board games especially chess, but I prefer games to be real time. I love being able to mix strategy with reflex and real time strategy games prepares your mind to be able to react fast. The only problem I see in real time games is that connection quality is a must, or it can cause lag issues.

Dynamic~

I like both types of games, but I prefer real time, cause it's way more dynamic and energetic. Dynamic strategies such as Starcraft for example, can boost your adrenaline quite a lot, I like doing things so they are the best for me. Of course turn-based ones have their charm too, games such as Heroes and so on can be quite interesting and challenging, they can also give you some piece of mind so there's that too. It really depends on the mood you are in.

I am playing both Turn based and Real time games. I like strategy games because there are chances that you can outplay and outwit a high level players.

I think they both are good. I never thought about this idea before as to which I prefer. I would say both have their place when it comes to gaming. I guess maybe I like turn based games better because you have time to think about what your next move is. That idea appeals to me.

I play both. I like turn based games since there is time to ponder and make strategies. Real time games require more micro skills and immediate decision making. As a fan of strategy games, I think there is no winner for me. The only matter of importance is whether the game is well made or not.

I love turn-based games because I mostly play them while I was growing up specially during my childhood. But now as I grow older, I prefer real-time strategy games. It really tests your skills and mindset on how you would react to things and events for like instantly without even thinking a lot about it. I believe it would enhance your gaming mind and way of thinking during pressure moments.

I don't feel that either style is actually better than the other, it really just depends on the mood that I'm in. If I'm feeling like playing something a little more relaxed and laid back, I'm going to go for the turn-based style game like Civilization V. They give you time to think and the sense of pressure isn't as heavy as it is with real time. If I'm looking for a more intense, action focused experience I'll obviously go for something real time like Age of Empires or StarCraft.
