WP Smush

WP Smush
WP Smush is a very popular WordPress image optimization plugin that will help your reduce size of your uploaded images and therefore get your website to load faster.

Having a fast loading website can also help you with your SEO, Google loves fast websites and will give them good ranking positions because it will always look for websites that can offer the best possible experience to their users.

The main problem I found with the free version was the 1MB limit for optimizing images and also not fully optimizing the images that did fall into the second category, because they want you to buy WP Smush Pro for that.

Pros
  • WP Smush has a free limited version! This is probably the best free plugin of its kind out there. It basically runs automatically once configured and your don't really have to worry about anything. It dose a decent job at optimizing your images, very decent for a free plugin. Most plugin of kind have a image number limit but not WP Smush.
  • WP Smush has been around for several years and has a lot of experience with image optimization.

Cons
  • The free version of WP Smush won't be enough you are obsessed with optimization
  • Costs 50 dollars per month to use the WP Smush Pro which allows for unlimited number of images to be optimized. In my opinion this is a huge sum, way bigger than other competitors and certainly not good enough for a small blog that doesn't have a lot of pictures posted on a monthly basis.
  • You can't really buy only WP Smush - you need to buy the whole package of other plugin the company that develop WP Smush produces. I consider this a huge issue, because I don't want to be forced into buying other plugins just because I like WP Smush and for this buying the WP Smush Pro is out of the question for me, I prefer looking into other alternatives.

ShortPixel

ShortPixel
I just discovered ShortPixel a couple of days ago and I have to say, it was love at first sight and first install. lol.

Joke aside, ShortPixel is one of the best image optimizing plugin you can find for WordPress. Seriously, this bad boy will optimizing EVERYTHING.

In the past I used the free version of WP Smush for my blog but noticed that my speed testing scores on multiple platforms showed optimized images, especially on Google speed testing tools, it clearly showed I can optimized and save up to 3.5MB by optimizing some of my images even thought they were already optimized with WP Smush.

So I installed ShortPixel and disabled WP Smush and everything felt into place in a couple of minutes.

Pros
  • ShortPixel really went into detail with the optimization. Optimizing every pictures on my website, including avatars and icons.
  • ShortPixel saved all the original images into a separate file to have as backup, I consider this a very nice touch if you ever want to switch back to the originals.
  • The actual optimization was dramatic without any side effects in quality of my pictures. Compared with Wp Smush I saved a lot of space! I did all those speed test again and obtain maximum scores for my image optimization, my blog also feels a lot more faster.
  • ShortPixel is totally free and you don't have to buy it to have fully optimized pictures.
  • You can make a one time payment to get more images optimized. It cost me 10 bucks for 10k pictures. Considering I don't post very often and I didn't had more than 200 pictures in total on my blog, it will take me a long time to reach the 10k limit. Not to mention that every month I will get another 100 pictures as for free!

Cons
  • ShortPixel only optimizes 100 pictures a month. If you have more than this on your blog or website like I did, you will have to wait for another month to pass to get another 100 pictures, or you can buy the plugin or make a onetime payment.
