We are heading towards an epidemic of digestive diseases from wheat gluten, and even whole wheat products.

We are heading towards an epidemic of digestive diseases from wheat gluten, and even whole wheat products.
I have been reading a little about the genetic modification of wheat, and how this is affecting our digestive system, and contributing to diseases like Celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's Disease, and even seemingly unrelated illnesses like diabetes type 1 & 2 both. It also can cause seizures, or at least make them worse, and also can contribute to mental hallucinations for people with mental illness or autism.
The problem here, or at least part of the problem, is that wheat itself has been modified until it is no longer the same as the wheat that has been grown or harvested wild for many centuries. So, when we hear of wheat being called "the staff of life", it was defintely not what we eat for wheat now. No longer do we have the "amber waves of grain" even. Wheat has been hybridized , and even now genetically modified so that it grows faster and produces more wheat. It has a much bigger wheat-head, and was so top-heavy that it could not be supported on the stalk; so it was necessary to develop a variety that grows on a very short stalk. Now, wheat only grows a little over a foot tall, produces up to 10 times the amount of wheat as the old-fashioned varieties did, and can be harvested much sooner. This all seems to be great, except that now we have developed diseases that didn't exist previously, and are directly related to the hybrid varieties of wheat, which our bodies do not process properly. Even worse, wheat also can now pass through the blood-brain barrier, and it bonds to the same receptors in the brain as heroin does, and now becomes an addictive substance, that can also cause withdrawal symptoms when a person stops consuming wheat products. It is added to almost all of the processed foods that we buy at the grocery, and when you. Think about it, there is not only the bread aisle, but the cereal aisle, and also all of the pasta and other foods that use wheat; so almost all of the store has wheat products in one form or another. This is causing an epidemic of digestive-related issues, and only promises to get worse, as long as we are using the genetically modified wheat and gluten from that wheat.

Nowadays we have many people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, bowel diseases and cancer in my country. Something which can account for a rise in those diseases is our diet. My grandpa still tells us from time to time that the food he used to eat long ago tasted much better and he feels that it was more nutritious too. Nowadays many foods are genetically modified and although it has been claimed that those foods are safe for consumption this is not the case. A study by the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) states that genetically modified foods can cause gluten intolerance. My mother suffers from celiac disease and she can't consume products containing wheat. She is actually following a strict diet and she is struggling to adopt this new diet.

In all fairness - bearing in mind that this conspiracy theory was debunked many years ago - as there is absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever to support the claim that " GMO wheat is causing an epidemic of digestive diseases ".

As there is very strong conclusive evidence - gained from well over 20 years of research - by many well respected and reputable bodies - including Harvard - confirming that GMOs do not have a negative effect on humans and in fact are - no more likely to harm us than traditionally reared and grown food products - and that evidence is also supported by The Celiac Disease Foundation themselves - who have addressed this concern by issuing a world wide statement confirming that GMO wheat along with other food products - does not trigger gluten sensitivity.

I'm more inclined to think that - although being aware of anything that has the potential to endanger our health - is a good thing - we do sometimes need to take a step back and evaluate the situation - simply because - if we all took the things that are reported in the media as being bad for us too seriously - we would all by now - be living in a little glass dome eating a very limited diet - due to the fact - that we would all be too scared to venture out or eat - for fear of being contaminated by one thing or another - especially as the way that many of these conspiracy theories are worded - can be somewhat alarming to say the least.

I don't buy this at all. People have been eating bread for centuries and our chances of developing diseases now based on bread consumption is likely not any higher than it was back then. This whole gluten free thing is a fad, and most people do not need to adhere to a gluten free diet. I think this whole GMO and gluten problem has been way over stated.

I agree. Mainstream media is full of conspiration theories. It's like saying that transgenic foods cause cancer. Nobody has proved that yet still sensationalism is our GOD nowadays and everything is a big scandal. Keep in mind that nearly all types of industrial foods can cause cancer so that's nothing new really.

I think that with all of the genetically modified foods we are eating we will be seeing more diseases. You never heard of anyone being gluten intolerant years ago and the only thing different is the GMO foods we are eating.

This an overrated review for eating bread. There no such proof that the main cause of those diseases mentioned above are related to bread consumption. They may be one of the contributing factor but the percentage of that contribution is never that significant.

A lot of food is being modified because there are so many people in this world. We have to carefully select what we purchase and try to grow our own foods (like vegetables, herbs especially)

I agree with this, and from what i have been reading, this is a big part of why the wheat that we have no is so drastically different from the original wheat, even up to 50 years ago. One of the very best books about gluten intolerance is called "Wheat Belly", and it was written by Doctor William Davis, MD. This book covers all of the factors about what has happened to not only wheat; but some of the other foods and grains that we have traditionally eaten since time immemorial. It is available free on Amazon Prime Reading, if anyone has a Prime account and is interested in learning more about this topic.

I agree with you. I think the best way to get rid of these problems is simply to start producing our own food in our backyard. I am already growing some vegetables in vazos in my yard and soon I will do some harvests.

People have been eating wheat products from the beginning of time and people live on anyway. We are now bombarded with information on alternatives but even when there has been a considerable amount of people who may have switched the recommended healthy ways, people are, probably now more than ever before dying from chronic diseases. It's not that I am in total what disagreement with all of their theories, but it's how some people would want you to believe that if you don't do as they say you may probably survive for long which is not true because whether they may eat right or not, some people still suffer from some form of chronic disease

I agree somewhat that the wheat of today is not what is use to be but the epidemic is really coming from the meat and dairy industry. Did you watch that film called what the healthy, it is a life changer, it breaks down the conspiracies of the meat and dairy industry, powerful documentary, and many people have ben inspired to drop the meat because of the documentary.

Gone are the days where plants do grow naturally. This is not only wheat but 90% of what we are eating today are fertilized with dangerous chemicals that affect the body health. Everything we are taking in today such as Meat, poultry food, plants, drinks, etc are not healthy and has led to so many illnesses. Even many fisher men make use of a poisonous substance to catch fishes that are sold to the general public. There was a day I was listening to a news about new discoveries and it was announced that a new chemical that can make tomatoes, pepper, etc grows within the next 5days was introduced.I said what? I think the normal time for tomatoes to grow is 3months minimum. Furthermore, there was this popular drink everybody including me normally enjoyed in my country. But later on, a test shows that this drink can bleach a cloth and it can easily loose any tough bolt&nut in a mechanic workshop when apply. Imagine! a drink that is met for human consumption is also performing this wonders on cloth. Every day the hospitals record high rate of sick people and new diseases are being discovered on a daily basis. I think the government are the only one to find a solution to this by enforcing laws on these dangerous chemicals used in our agricultural system but the only problem is that even the government support this. As for me I grow a small farm in my house and planted my favourite fruits there. I also check any food very well before buying.

I believe that genetic modification is widely done across food industries.Hopefully, our bodies can adjust to the changes within such foods. I guess some diseases may not surface yet but these effects might be more visible after decades. For now, we can only eat and hope that all is fine.

I think the junk food trend is responsible for this type of the stuff. As you can see that there are times when things such as that may get affected as well. I don't know if it's a good thing to go for the junk food every single day. As that can be really bad for the stomach and in turn you can have set of such issues with the health in due time for sure.

I heard about the genetic modification of wheat, and there are a lot of genetic modification of our food. I think that not only digestive diseases will affect us, there is also the cancer diseases that it started to take away a lot of lives. No one does anything, we let the EU tell us and even force us, what to eat. In the old times there was natural food and no additives and chemicals, now we eat only altered food and this will make us more sick day by day!

I have read about GMO and it really had me wondering about the long term effects of relying on food like that. They should at least study and test genetically modified food and see if they have negative effects on the human body in the long run. It may even cause the average lifespan of humans to shorten..

I have no basis on this belief but I'd say that the prevalent diseases now may be caused by the food we eat. Breast cancer, brain cancer, colon cancer, diabetes, they are getting getting nowadays and people are wondering. Just this morning, we learned that a family friend has stage 2 colon cancer. I shook my head as if saying, here's another one. Colon is the big intestine that is nearest the rectum, correct me if I'm wrong, and it holds the waste of the human body. When the digested food is toxic, the colon may suffer. I really don't know but the digestive problems are also getting prevalent - acid reflux, gastritis, ulcer, etc.

One interesting thing abut cancer cells , is that all they live on is glucose. Glucose comes from carbohydrate foods, and wheat is one of the highest foods on the glycemic index, but other starches like potatoes and rice are also turn into glucose just like sweets and sugars do. For a number of years now, we have been told that meat and fats are bad; but neither one of those affect the glycemic index, or add glucose into the bloodstream for cancer cells to live on. People have actually put cancer into remission when they went onto a ketogenic diet that severely limits sugars and starches, and the cancer cells starved. It might not work for everyone; but it can't hurt for your friend to read about a ketogenic diet and the effects on cancer cells, Corrie .

I think much of this has to do with overeating and eating too many over-processed foods. There is so much sugar and starch in the everyday foods that most people eat that it's a wonder more people don't get sick. Sugars and starches are like poison for a lot of people (and like a drug for some). People are practically addicted to the stuff. I think cutting back will make a difference. It's certainly worth a try if you're not well. It won't hurt.

The best to prevent all these digestive diseases is for the wheat plant to be harvested the way it has been done in the years past without hybridizing them or adding chemicals to them which can cause bowel or digestive disease.

I can't say that I agree with this, and using terms like "epidemic" is just another way to stir up sensationalist drama. There is absolutely no scientific proof anywhere that genetically modified foods have the ability to cause disease or illness in humans. Besides that, there is no logical reason to assume so either, besides people having the opinion that "humans shouldn't be playing God because it will result in bad things." If you ask me, these "diseases" are a combination of mass hysteria and people having extremely poor diets. The number of people who are actually sick due to wheat gluten is insanely low.

Honestly, I'm a living proof of this. Since I was a kid, I have been more than healthy, never ever got anything on my digestive system, always feeling great. Since I became and adult, most of the regular food I used to eat gives me a peptic/digestive issue. So, can I be eating dairies my whole life, and now I'm lactose intolerant? I've been already diagnose with irritable bowel syndrome, and just a month ago I had a biopsy to check for Celiac disease. It has to be the genetic manipulation, the conditions how seeds/products are kept, contamination while fabrication/processing/distribution.
