I'd say bread. Sure, this depends on context, but bread generally goes with everything. I mean, you can't have rice or potatoes as a side dish with soup, can you? There are just so many varieties of bread out there and chances are you'll find one that you love. At the moment, I can't live without my daily dose of some healthy, low-gi brown bread with some butter or jam. Its just a great food that is super cheap and accessible in a variety of forms. And toast, when done right, is to die for!

For me, bread goes with 90% of food, so I wouldn't even consider it a side dish, I would consider it a MUST dish (lame, I know). But anyway, other than bread, depending on the meal I would most likely go for the potatoes most of the time.

Potatoes all the way. Potatoes are far more used compared to any other side dishes in my country. It is just the most frequently used side dish, then comes bread and rice and long after the noodles.

I love potatoes because they can be prepared in so many different ways. You can even be creative and try to invent new ones or maybe add things on top such as spices, cheese and more! Potatoes go well with everything. You can even eat them in the soup. Just cook them and chop them inside, easy.

My favorite kind is probably just the classic mashed potato with a bit of butter and sour cream. Add a nice steak or grilled chicken meat to that and I am all set! It is a perfect meal.

You remind me of my husband’s request for me to make mashed potatoes. When we have steak for dinner or sometimes even friend chicken, my husband would say that mashed potatoes and cole slaw would go well with our dish. But to be honest, it is not easy to make mashed potatoes so I always try to evade that request. Sometimes I buy the mashed potatoes from the fast food outlet and that is fine with him.

This is a somewhat difficult decision as all the food choices are really very good in my opinion. Either way, I choose the mashed potato because I simply love mashed potatoes. And speaking of puree, lately I've been eating pumpkin puree and I'm finding it sensational. It is worth checking!

I actually wish I could pick two since it's a hard choice between bread and potatoes since there's so much variety. I love tater tots and french fries as well as mashed potatoes more than almost anything. I always have a soft spot for garlic bread and baguettes with salted butter. Having to choose one I'd probably say bread since it goes with a lot more things.

I enjoy a nice, fresh crispy bun with my meals. They are even better when warmed with butter. Definitely it is my favorite side. There are so many different types of rolls. I also like fresh baked bread. It is a nice side to any meal.

Rice is not a side dish... visit any country in Asias. Ask rice as side dish... See what will happen.

I've visited many places in Asia and noticed that a little meat dish will be served with rice on the side, or a vegetarian dish like dahl is served with rice. I'm not sure what you mean by your comment. Furthermore, in the typical North American diet rice is considered a common side dish along with some vegetables.

I mean, for me rice is the main dish and viands helps ricebto be more tasty. Or maybe i just love rice

Out of the options, potatoes and bread are the only two I consider to be side dishes. Rice, to most people who eat it regularly, is the main staple and all the vegetables and meats they eat along with it are the side dishes. Noodles are also a main dish in my opinion, as I've never ordered something and gotten noodles to go along with it as a side dish. Out of potatoes and bread, I personally prefer potatoes. I don't like bread so much, whereas potatoes, whether fried, baked, or mashed, are all good.

It would have to depend on what I am eating. I have eaten all you listed as 'side dishes' and some as main dishes too featuring those items besides bread.

This is a difficult question, because I like all these options. But if it is to choose one, I choose potatoes, I love potatoes in every way, mostly fried and mashed And speaking of mashed, I love mashed potatoes with cheese, it gets very delicious.

I like most side dishes but potatoes, French fries, etc. is probably my favorite. Who doesn't like french fries and mashed potatoes? Sweet potatoes too are very good. There are many ways to make potatoes and I like all of them.

What we call a main or side-dish depends on the culture, so let's try to just agree that all of these are a side-dish somewhere in the world! In my country rice IS a side-dish, so I'm voting for rice. I love it in every shape and form, and I don't think a meal feels complete without it.

Potatoes are a close second, though. I certainly love to eat delicious mashed potatoes with cheese... Gosh, I'm hungry now.

Rice is more of a staple here in my country, where you just got to have rice in every meal. I don't believe that of course, but this is why I don't consider rice as a side dish. I feel like the rice is just part of the meal. But when I'm being asked what side dish would I want then I'll have to say vegetables. I love corn, carrots, and broccoli as my side dish. They all pair very well with steak, it's nutritious and delicious!

I eat rice most of the time. I eat steamed or boiled rice. I eat rice with vegetables, curries and lentils. Biryani and Indian dish made from rice and meat is my favorite rice dish, I also like fried rice and pulao (another Indian rice dish). When I am not eating rice, I will be eating naan and chapati (Indian style bread).

It's difficult to explain but let me just say that our culture was based on American when I was a girl. With the food, the popular dishes are Chinese cuisine but American dishes are considered classy particularly with steak. That may be the reason why mashed potato and potato salad are my favorites when it comes to side dishes. That reminds me of my younger years when we would have steak at home and my mother would whip up a delicious bowl of mashed potatoes. It's just sad that my mother couldn't cook anymore so I had to be satisfied with the mashed potatoes in the restaurants.

With the choices given, I'd go with potatoes. Mainly because of its versatility as a side in different dishes. They can be bland at times. However, if seasoned and cooked right, potatoes as a side dish can really accentuate your meal as a whole.

Rice would be my second choice, sometimes first, depending on what sort of mood I'm in. I love brown rice for its health properties, yellow rice is also another good choice.

The potatoes are the best because all of it presentations have good taste and are good with every kind of food. The french fries, the baked potatoes, the smashed potatoes, potato chips, you can put it in a salad, or in a meat and it will be very, very good.

I don't see bread as a side dish to be honest as it's served in many places whether you want it or not. I do like potatoes on the side, but usually sauteed ones ratehr than mash, or truffle fries are the latest. Some places offer sweet potato fries which are slightly healthier and just as yummy.

My actual favorite side dish is a side of steamed greens with spinach, broccoli, and beans as they are healthy and go well with a meal.

Though I don't really consider it a side dish, rather a fundamental part of a meal, I eat rice with just about everything. I may not be from an Asian country, and people here consider bread to be the "must have" side with any dish, I've always preferred rice. For one thing it is far healthier than bread, especially the very processed, packaged breads they sell in super markets these days. The other thing is that it is incredibly cheap yet filling, perfect for anyone that is on a tight budget.

None from my list. Though if you have to choose one out from the list then surely the noodles. But not the bread and the rice. I prefer to have the chicken or the prawns as a food. That being said, not a lot of times I prefer to eat that. I can't tell you how it is going to be good enough. Rice with the chicken or the prawns would be lot easier. There are times when I prefer to eat that in weekend if possible.

I love mashed potatoes with peas! I can eat mashed potatoes daily and with anything! I do not like the boxed potatoes, they have to be made from fresh potatoes. My second favorite side would have to be bread.

These are all starches, and I don't eat starches. Well, I try to avoid them anyway. My favorite side dish is usually a small side salad. Sometimes, I'll choose green beans, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, or asparagus.

Garlic Naan bread is definitely my favourite dish. It awakens my taste buds to greater things to come. And if the main dish portion is small-sized (which is usually the case), my naan companion already kept me filled.

It was very easy for me to vote for this poll because I'm absolutely crazy about potatoes, so ... Of course I voted for it. I like potatoes in every way and in virtually all types of recipes. Give me potatoes and I can say that I'll be in heaven (no... this is not an exaggeration, it's potatoes' power... hahaha!!).

I will pretty much eat any potato side dish that there is. I love potato salad, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, french fries, you name it. I really love roasted rosemary potatoes tossed in olive oil, butter, salt, pepper, and rosemary. I could probably eat that as a side dish with any meal. I know that's a little boring, but it's true.

None of the listed food above is my favorite side dish because tuna pie is the one I like. Tuna pie is part of my meal triangle and it has a high protein content that helps to build up muscle.

Potatoes are the best choice. Besides being tasty they can be made in various ways and they fit in great amount of different types of dishes. I could eat potatoes every day without the slightest problem (and no, this is not a joke, haha).

Oh, mashed potatoes definitely! Over here they prepare them with lots of milk and yummy seasonings. It tastes so good that it could be the main course by itself! Of course, you need also a good source of protein like a juicy steak or some chicken

I love potatoes for a side dish, especially baked and mashed potatoes. I actually prefer them than fried recipes like french fries. I like it when mashed potato is filled with gravy. I also love cheese flavored mashed potato though it's not that popular. For baked potatoes, I like it when they serve it with sour cream and cheese flavor. Another thing I like with potatoes is that they are easy to eat. I usually order potatoes for a side dish when I eat rice meals.

Yes, I love them also. Mashed potatoes with cheese and some kind of seasoning (Preferably a very spicy one!) All that followed by some rice and a tasty steak of course. Simply delicious

Noodles sometimes can be both, could eat it as a side dish or as the main dish but what is permanently a side dish to me is fruit salad.I just taking my fruit salad few minutes after finishing my main dish.I don't know but it like it helps make the main dish sit well in me. So I have been practicing this for a long time now.

Potatoes are the best side dish for me because they complement almost any main dish since the flavor is muted and subtle so you could mix it in with pretty much anything. Not only that but it's also very versatile as already pointed out in the poll meaning you could serve it boiled or fried or baked, etc. Additionally, it goes with most any cuisine like Italian or even Chinese food, so it really is the ultimate side dish for me.

My fave side dish is bread or anything close to it like pita and muffins. It's the best side dish for stews because you can dip it to absorb all the juicy stuff. Bread or Buns is best with fried chicken and gravy.

I choose mashed potatoes. That's already equal as rice so I choose the potatoes. Ever since if they let me choose on what dish will I like I always go for the mashed one. Love the texture as well when milk blended on the flavour and I make sure its always warm when they serve it. The aroma of the dish really gets my attention all the time. Even I finished my cup of already, I still asked my friends potato cup if I can have it. I more enjoy it with gravy on top too and I make sure its full and warm. Yummy!.

Potatoes are my favorites. My most favorite of all are mashed potatoes! It's a side dish that I always get at restaurants. It's also my very own specialty. I remember the person who taught me how to make mashed potatoes is my ex boyfriend. Every week when he'd visit me he'd bring me some, it's the sweetest ever!

Rice is a staple food in our country so I wouldn't call it a side dish. I like mashed potato with gravy or butter but there are other much more flavorful side dishes that aren't listed. I love macaroni salad, mac and cheese, sautéed mushroom, lasagna, and coleslaw. On some days when we want to do away with rice, we can even have them as main meals.
