Why do people wear socks with sandals?

Why do people wear socks with sandals?
Children can get away with it because they lose their shoes all the time, but why do adults (mainly men) wear socks with sandals? Surely it defeats the purpose of the wearing sandals.

It's a turn off and looks wrong, so why don't they wear proper shoes or sneakers if they want to wear socks?

It's summertime and I cringe when I see people wearing open toed sandals with socks. The purpose of sandals is so that your feet can air to keep them cool and socks defeat the purpose of that.

Yes, this is something even I cannot also cannot understand. I'm a person who is never fond of wearing socks and if it is summer time then it is a big No for me. Moreover socks and shoes are an universal combination and sandals do not stand anywhere in the scene.

I had to laugh at this because it is one of my pet hates both in men and women. I don't know if it's a British thing or whether other countries feel the same but it is an unattractive look and very popular amongst the older generation. I wonder whether it's because feet get sweaty even in sandals and can rub the feet if they are worn alone. Comfort would be more important to them and they wouldn't care what other people thought. It's a very nerdy look for young people too but I do see it sometimes.

It's something that I have seen worldwide and it's unattractive. Maybe in your own back yard, but not in public. I imagine people to do it to prevent rubbing and blisters, but in that case why don't they wear normal shoes? As you say I'm sure they don't care what people think, but if a partner did that, no way would I go out with him or be seen with him in public. In fact it's a valid reason to end the relationship if they persist!

Several people wear socks along with sandals for one or a variety of reasons. The first reason that comes to mind is cold. When there is cold, people don't mind putting on socks with sandals while going out. Except for school children whose code of dressing includes a pair of sandals and socks, this is most common with aged adults whose ages range between 55-100 years because their body cannot cope with such weather any longer.

I really don't know. It looks and feels so stupid. I tried it once and immediately switched it.

It has been a question I have been asking myself since I was little and first noticed this fashion trend for some. It makes no sense to me. Lots of time they are knee socks too. It is a silly look but it is one that will continue because for some reason it makes sense to some people to do so. For once I would like to hear a reason that makes sense and that I will finally have the answer to a question I have been asking myself for so long.

Well, I've done this questionable act quite a few times and my reason is that I dislike getting sand and what not between my toes. I'm sure other people have different reasons for wearing them like they forgot to take them off or to guard against parasites and the like depending on where they live. I live in a sandy place so I find it very triggering when there is sand or rocks under my foot that I can't get out without taking it off. Socks prevent that a bit more than just going out without them.

Haha, don't get me started on this topic. I couldn't agree more with what you've written about it. Whenever I see somebody wearing white socks and sandals in public I literally want to facepalm myself - I just don't understand. How is this a good idea? not only does it look bad, it doesn't seem logical. The whole point of sandals is so the feet can breathe and aren't ''contained'' in the shoe. if you wear socks on your feet then you defeat the purpose of the sandals in the first place.

Maybe it is just my area but I often see the older people doing this here. Very cringey.

Over here in Malaysia, there are senior men who wear socks with slippers or sandals too. This is due to the fact that their feet feel cold as they are aging. Some middle age people also wear socks with sandals when they are window shopping in shopping malls. It is a common scene, nobody really cares what you are wearing because the public do not often notice what you are wearing at all. Once, I wore 2 different colors of sandals but nobody notice my blunder either. Otherwise, I would had been laughed at.

I don't understand that. Is it a fashion statement? Are they trying to hide something like excessive sweating of the feet? Honestly I tried doing that once because i am curious about why people do that. Well Im not comfortable so didn't do it again.

Because I'm so comfortable in myself I don't have to do anything to please you and your silly social rules. If I want to dress like I don't care that's fine I can sit out in the middle of the park in my underwear. So if I feel so inclined to feel the wind blow through my white cotton socks as I where stylish sandals, I am going to do that whenever I want.

I do not know the purpose of wearing socks with sandals either. I personally do not practice this but perhaps the person does not want to get their feet dirty while wearing sandals. Yet they do not want to wear shoes or sneakers either because it takes much longer to put on.

I have no idea, but surely this is something that I have never done, never do and I never intend to do. But it would be cool to understand why some people make this "not-so-common" combination. Of course each person uses what they want and what they like, but I don't really understand the reason for the combination.

However... What would the world be like if we were all the same, right? :-)

I particularly do not see much problem in children wearing sandals with socks. In the 90's, when I was a kid I also wore sandals with socks and I remember being something very comfortable for my feet. I think every parent should dress their child as they wish.

In my part of the world, not only children, even adults wear sandals with socks especially when it is cold. It helps protect the feet from cramps and from drying due to extreme cold.

I wore sandals when I was young and I always play outside in the sun, after a few months, I can see the uneven skin tone on my feet due to sunburn, so I'm thinking maybe that's one of the reason why people wear socks with sandals. Another reason might be for cold weather.

I don't wear it out in public because I think it's tacky but I do sometimes wear socks and sandals around and outside the house. The reasons are actually pretty logical. For starters, I'm just plain lazy. I like having socks on because even in the summer the wood floor in my house is cold to step on. Now let's say I want to go outside or into my garden and I'm too lazy to put on shoes, I just put my sandals on.

The second reason is sandals make my feet hurt and give me blisters. If I have my socks on, then the extra cushioning avoids this. Though I don't wear sandals in public, period.

If you want to do it at home or in the garden I think it's fine. It's like having greasy hair at home, but you wouldn't go out with dirty and greasy hair would you?

I'm glad you don't do it outside the house, because I am sure many people do this at home. It's just one of those things that seems wrong to do even if it comfortable. The best thing to do is not wear sandals or cover the toes wit plasters which is what I used to do to protect them against rubbing, as long as the plasters were skintoned and not white ones!

I used to be a sad victim of this fashion error as a kid (I was weird I know). During the winter, I hated wearing shoes but loved keeping my socks on with sandals. What I do know is that some people, unfortunately, do not have shoes. So they are forced to wear sandals with socks instead of proper footwear.

Personally, I feel nothing is wrong with it at home. But if you come outside and have the option of wearing shoes or taking off your socks, choose one of the other.

I think it is laziness. I will admit to doing this on occassion. I just do it because I have socks on and the sandals are handy and easy to put on. I don't wear them too many places, but if I am just going to get some gas or buy a snack from a local store..I don't care that much what I look like.

When I was in teens, I used to wear sandals during the summer. My reason socks will help my feet stay clean. I still wear sandals, I don't wear socks with sandals. My reason: I now drive a car and my feet gets no more dirty.

Some people get really sweaty feet and have to wear socks to absorb the sweat. Sandals with socks are still cooler on your feet than wearing sneakers where your foot is trapped and has no air flow. I agree, it's not the most stylish look but I can understand why some people do it. There are many people who are just completely oblivious to any sense of fashion.

If I had to guess, comfort? I don't personally do it, but I have tried doing it once and I've found that socks and sandals give me good comfort on my feet. I don't know why either, it's like something is cuddling my feet for some reason and it gives me a good stress relief out of that. I would definitely not wear them in public however, it does look really weird, but for those who have never experienced the comfort, I really suggest you give it a try :)

I think its cool. In my culture its definitely cool. it shows that you don't care about the rules... they don't apply to you. You can do whatever you want when it comes to fashion. I love wearing a good clean pair of white socks and some cute shorts with adidas sandals. They shouldn't be like fashion sandals or anything. the style is to only wear them with adidas sandals. Otherwise, its completely ridiculous and silly. It's a cute trend. I'll always do it.

Socks with sandals? I have that question too. And some people also wear shoes without socks! How do they do that? No seriously. How? :) :D

I also do not know why many people wear socks with sandals. I think maybe it's because the sandals are more comfortable than the shoes, do not think it wrong to use so, everyone should wear what they like. I have not particularly worn socks with sandals, but at home I usually wear socks with slippers on colder days.

I think anyone that wears socks with sandals knows what they're doing, knows that it's weird, and is probably trying to get attention. I've never seen anyone unironically wear socks with sandals or give a valid reason other then "I'm trying to draw attention to myself."

Yes! this is so weird! I don't see the point of wearing socks if you have sandals on. It makes no sense, but I guess these people want to wear the sandals but as well have covered their feet? It is honestly cringing-worthy and it looks so ugly, somebody should start a campaign against this, lol.

I can't answer this Alexa, I am a man but I'm not wearing a sock with sandals or slippers. Yes, I said slippers because I saw some men here that wear socks with their slippers and it looks so wrong. But, what can I say, it looks wrong but maybe they have a hidden reason for this, maybe they need to cover something that looks horrible!

I don't understand this trend but I have heard from people that do this (and they don't care about their appearance) that they do it if they would get too cold in just sandals. It doesn't make it any clearer because there are shoes that aren't too thick so you can both look normal and not get your feet too warm but I guess those people think that sandals are something they have to wear during summer.
